US Lookup Requests / 1870 US lookup for Charles Hughes
« on: Thursday 23 March 06 14:12 GMT (UK)  »
Dear MeganWilber,
I saw your offer of help so here goes as I have not found where to look.
My Great Grandfather, Charles Hughes went to US and I believe, married, as they had a daughter born in Philadelphia.

Charles was born in Groesffordd, Llanrwst, Denbighshire, Wales 9 July 1840.
He married in Wales and his first wife died in child birth in Sept 1866.
In the 1871 UK census, he is not found but his daughter is with his mother in Wales.
Don't know exactly, but guess he was in the US.
From the 1881 UK census he was back in Wales- 8 Cambrian Terrace,  Ynyscynhaiarn, Carnarvonshire (now Porthmadoc) with his second wife Elizabeth Davies.
Their daughter, Jeonnie (wrong spelling of Jennie), who was born in "Philadelphia (British Subject), America" is with them born about 1873, and other children.
The next known child, a son, was born in Wales in about 1875.
I am trying to find out if he was in the US in 1870 census, how he got there,  marriage details, and birth of Jeonnie.
I have tried to find the right archive in the US but with little success, and quite happy to purchase the two certificates.
Many thanks, you did offer!!!

They signed Retailers Trust Company at the foot of the document, but no address.  I found it seems to have been taken over by Norfolk Trust if my reading is correct.

In the papers for other family members I found an address of c/o mrs pierce sims, waldron, sank (looks like), Canada.  Not dated.  I have assumed he died in Saskatoon because that was the address of solicitors.  They may have multiple offices.  Maybe he was just a farm labourer, but spoils the family story!!!
Thanks for your ideas.

Canada / Thomas Kendrick in Saskatoon

I have identified Thomas in the 1901 Census UK.  I know he was born in Ysceifiog in Flintshire 28 April 1882.  He died in Saskatoon 8 Nov 1942 intestate, but I have a list of distribution of his assets by Retailers Trust Company.  I am trying to fill in the blank between 1901 and 1942 as by hearsay he was a farmer on a grant of land.  the family share $48, enabled us to buy a picnic case which was affectionately know as Uncle Tom!

« on: Wednesday 15 March 06 11:13 GMT (UK)  »
I am hoping to find details in the 1841 census of Mary A Hughes (nee Jones) born in Westminster about 1811 who married Hugh Hughes.  In the 1851 census she is a widow.  Their son Charles was born in 1840 in Groesford Llanwrst.  Hopefully
