Hi,

Wondering if you got any further with researching Joseph Nott possibly1737 to 1811. I've been down a few dead ends with this.

Thanks

I have had another dig into this today. I started with what I think is a red herring in an article on a Hugh (1802-1876) who was deported to Australia in 1840 for stealing a sheep and then have his wife help him to try to escape from prison. He was a shoemaker but was from Achahorn so, although interesting, geographically it seems unlikely. The below trial papers also relate to a Hugh who was a "journeyman shoemaker" (which may be the same person):

High Court of Justiciary Trial Papers
Title   Trial papers relating to Hugh McGregor
Name   Hugh McGregor
Role   Accused
Crime   Theft by housebreaking, and prison-breaking
Trial Date   24 April 1839
Trial Location   Perth
Verdict   Guilty
Verdict Comments   Guilty in terms of own confession - theft by housebreaking.
Sentence   Transportation - 7 years
NRS Reference   JC26/1839/27
Notes   The Advocate Depute passed from the remaining charges.

The 1861 census for Monkswearmouth (Sunderland) shows Duncan's birthplace as what reads like "Barnparish Scotland". It has been suggested that this may be Barony which seems possible.

There is a Hugh McGregor  born in Barony on 1 May 1803. His parents were John and Christina nee Kirk.

There is a marriage between Hugh McG and Isobel Cunningham at Barony in August 1818. If this is the same Hugh he would only have been 15, but Scottish law may have allowed that at that time.

Hugh and Isobel then went on to have children, Isobel (1819), Alexander (1821), possibly Agnes (1823) and Hugh (1824).   I still can't see the birth of Duncan recorded which would have been 10 years later, but still possible. I'm not at all sure if I'm going down the right track here so am interested in how the others who are interested are fairing.

Hi,

I am yet another descendent of Duncan and Rebecca who had drawn a blank with shoemaker Hugh, so I too would be interested in any further research please.

The birth certificate of Rebecca (b 7/11/1837) shows only one parent, Ann Dennis.  On 5 November 1845 we have the marriage of Ann Dennis to James Hunt. Ann's father is shown as John Dennis, a mason and John Hunt's father is William Hunt, a sailor.

Hi harryone, thanks for the response. Yes, the George details match what I have and his father is James. Are you saying that James was baptised as Jacobs? I'm struggling with finding this link. Is there any documentation you can share please to show the connection?

I think my direct ancestors also go back to James Paul born in Warkworth. I've seen mention of one James Paul born in 1709 and another in 1712, one showing Catherine Hudson as spouse and the other Catherine Hutson. Not sure if it is the same person. The immediate descendant for me is George Paul b1740.

I can't see any mention of Joshua, but am interested in what info harryone has on James et al please.

A Joseph Nott and Elizabeth Tudor married on 24 September 1764 in Kidderminster, who seem the likely parents of Stephen.

The full obituary for Stephen is below: Newcastle Chronicle, 28 May 1864
Death of a Veteran

On Sunday evening the Rev. Mr. M'Kechnie preached an eloquent funeral sermon in the Primitive Methodist Chapel, North Shields, to a large congregation, with a view to improve the death of Mr. Stephen NOTT, one of the fathers of the Primitive denomination in North Shields. Mr. NOTT died at the patriarchal age of 84; in his youth and prime he served George 111 on board man-of-war in the great French war; and in the piping times of peace he settled down in Shields, and for many years remained an old and esteemed inhabitant of the town. Primitive Methodism had its origin amongst poor toiling men. By the zeal of its early founders it has been developed into the great power that it is now in the religious life of England. Mr. NOTT was one of those who bore the burden and heat of the day; and happily he lived to see the denomination large in numbers, greatly increased in wealth and position with a rising and educated ministry, and a noble career before it; the Primitive being amongst the healthiest and most active churches in the land.

He is my 4th Great Grandfather, down a succession of three more Stephens then down the female side of the family. His obituary in May 1864 says that in his youth and prime he served George III on board men of war in the Great French War and in the piping times of peace he settled down in Shields and for many years remained an old and esteemed inhabitant of the town.

I had seen elsewhere his parents shown as Joseph (b.1744) and Elizabeth Tudor (b 1742) but I haven't seen anything to support that.

If you managed to get any documentation it would be great to see. Thanks
