Lancashire / Re: LIVERPOOL COWKEEPERS
« on: Wednesday 30 November 22 21:55 GMT (UK)  »
Would you like more information about Liverpool Cowkeepers?  Both I and my husband had ancestors who were cowkeepers in Liverpool.  In my case it was an uncle by marriage, have some photos of him, with his prize cows and the Cowkeepers' Association Championship Cup.  My aunt had an uncle, Edward Capstick whose family had cows in Liverpool.  I have funeral cards for two of their children who died as infants.
Willing to share info and photos if anyone is interested.  Did visit uncle's dairy once, just after the war, in 1945.
Kath

Kath - I am related to Edward Capstick on the maternal side. I would be very pleased to share information.
Best wishes

Not sure how live this thread is.
Just to say my great granduncle on the maternal side was John Bowman Capstick from Birkhaw farm, Howgill who established one of the several Capstick lines of Liverpool cowkeepers. His descendants were to be the very last of the breed in Liverpool. Another cowkeeper line, descending from a Roger Capstick of Firbank on the other side of the Lune from Howgill had a tragic history in the city.

Westmorland / Re: Batemans from Westmorland!

To DarkLady:

it's a long time ago since you posted, but if you're still active, I can share information about your family.
Miles Bateman's  (1830-1859) parents were William B (1801-1865) and Mary nee Fawcett (1804-)
Miles was the Old Hutton blacksmith; William was the Beck Foot blacksmith at Half Island House.
Miles was the husband of Mary Udall (1832-)
After her widowhood, Mary ran the Beck Foot PO & grocers - (which stayed in the Bateman line for several generations)
William is my 3xGreatGrandfather

best wishes

Hello Jamjar
I'm wondering whether you might have any information on the marriage of William Bateman (b ca 1801) and Mary Fawcett (b ca 1806). MyHeritage reckons it is in 1825 in Firbank, Westmorland, but I can find no corroborative evidence. Any clues would be gratefully received.
with best wishes,

Westmorland / Re: More PARKs
« on: Tuesday 25 February 20 20:08 GMT (UK)  »
Hello everybody who might still be active on this thread.
I am yet another who has interest in the Park clans of Westmorland / Yorkshire.
My great grandmother is Mary Ann Bateman nee Park (1870-1955).
I am pretty sure she is the daughter of Robert (1825-) and Agnes Park (1835-) of at one time, Lowgill Farm, Beck Foot.
Ironically for such a prolific family, I have not found a definitive record for Mary Ann Park when single

Would be pleased to share or receive any information,
many thanks

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Will of Thomas Rowlandson
« on: Wednesday 19 February 20 14:22 GMT (UK)  »
Hello BridgetM
Some years since your entry about Thomas Rowlandson's will.
As you know Dobsole/Dobshole/Dob's Hall is now identified as Dob's Hole, and is next to Coat o' West.
My great grandfather John Bateman's (1856-1925) first wife Jane Rawes (1860-83) was the granddaughter of Thomas Rawes of Dobsole.
Her mother Agnes Rawes (single at Jane's birth) married William Rowlandson of Deep Slack, Whinfell parish (near Grayrigg) in August 1860. William was almost certainly Jane's biological father. The three then lived at Dobsole for some years before moving to Whinhowe (farm), adjacent to Deep Slack. They eventually had a total of nine children. William's parents were Thomas and Agnes Rowlandson of Deep Slack.

I was brought up in that area, and would be very interested in learning more about the will you posted,
with best regards

Jamjar
thank you again
As before, some information I already had, but also there are some new sources.
The MyHeritage tree is (as is often the case for such sites) full of branches to explore.
I always take care with their interpretation, but it is an excellent starting point for future exploration.

I will have to tend to other things for now, so won't trouble you for a while.
Perhaps I would PM you in future?
With best wishes
