Hi Rob,

I've located the attached 3 medal cards which might get you a little further along.

The attached - also from the Card Index - shows a later picture and says the building has been demolished. It's probably a housing estate by now!

Yorkshire (East Riding & York) / Re: County of York to Yorkshire?
« on: Thursday 13 February 20 00:20 GMT (UK)  »
York was the county town (i.e. administrative centre) of Yorkshire, Yorkshire being the name of the county. Another name you often find used as shorthand for Yorkshire is Yorks.

Yorkshire was the biggest county in England and as such was divided into smaller administrative areas these being the three ridings - East, West and North along with the Ainsty of York and the city of York (riding is an old anglo-saxon word meaning third so the south got left out).

There was a major overhaul of counties in 1974 when Yorkshire was split into several smaller counties. As part of this York did initially become a part of North Yorkshire losing its county town status to Northallerton. It eventually became what is called a unitary authority meaning it became a separate entity from North Yorkshire for administrative purposes.

You will still find the area referred to as Yorkshire by its older inhabitants (like me!).

Not wanting to confuse you further but Saddleworth became part of the county of Greater Manchester in 1974.

Hope this helps.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What Building is this?

There is what looks like a copper kettle in the right window along with what might be a jar of striped candy sticks which could suggest a cafe but I thought there would be a sign for it in that case.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: Parish difficult to make out

Two places mentioned in the other entries - Farmington and Hampnett - are both in Gloucestershire. The year at the top of the scan I think is 1782 and the date above the entry for Thomas and Elizabeth looks like 15th October. Unfortunately I can't determine the parish name.

The Common Room / Re: Daughters with father's forename as middle name
« on: Saturday 04 January 20 03:10 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather's first and middle names were Maude Stansfield. I kept finding his relationship to head-of-household on some sites given as 'daughter'. I tried to get this corrected where I found it - 'daughter?' was the initial response. I have now got as far as having him marked down as 'daughter son'!!

World War One / Re: Photos of Admiral Jellicoe and Lord Kitchener
« on: Sunday 22 December 19 20:09 GMT (UK)  »
Mine was a poor idea having looked up a little on Admiral Jellicoe - he didn't sail with Kitchener and survived WW1.

I imagine Skoosh was following a train of thought in the way I was from the mention of Kitchener though it may not directly answer your original query. To go back to that it has always surprised me how much (often undeserved) deference was shown to those high up in society by those at the bottom in those days. I suppose they were the celebrities of their day. Very sadly their games didn't end in somebody being evicted from a house rather in the cost of millions of lives.
