Family History Beginners Board / Re: What does this document mean?
« on: Sunday 08 June 25 17:03 BST (UK)  »
Thank you. It came from the Times newspaper. I guess this was in preparation for his move to Australia as he would not be around to settle his own creditors.

I need to find what preceeded this that prompted the move.

Family History Beginners Board / What does this document mean?
« on: Sunday 08 June 25 14:51 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to understand what happened to one of my ancestors.

In 1856 he left his wife and two young kids and moved from London to Australia.  He died in Melbourne 7 years later, penniless in a benevolent asylum having never seen his wife or kids again.

I have found the attached document from London in 1856 just prior to him leaving for Australia, but I don't know what it means.  I assume he wasn't bankrupt as he somehow bought a ticket to Australia.  I'm sure this holds a clue as to why he moved to Australia, so any help appreciated!

Hi,

I am looking for software to analyse my gedcom and tell me how many people of each generation are identified on my tree.

For instance  -  2G Grandparents 16 identified out of a total possible of 16.
                    - 3G Grandparents 30 identified out of a total possible of 32 etc.

FamilyTreeAnalyser does have this function, but it doesn't quite work where there have been cousin marriages as it only counts the common ancestor once, when they will appear twice in the tree, so it makes it appear as though there are gaps when there are none.

Any ideas?

Many thanks

Leicestershire Lookup Requests / Re: Lester family of Scalford

Queenie, that is very kind of you, thank you.  Lots more for me to look at there over the weekend to tie in all the families.

I've also found more information which I think adds weight to Mary Lester being John's daughter, which I will note here incase of interest to you or anyone else in the future doing a search!

John Exton and Hannah Lester had a son, Thomas Exton (b 1771). who would have been Mary's nephew.

In Thomas Exton's will he mentions Charles Campbell Morris (Mary's Grandson via Campbell Morris, b 1770), and Mary Ann Saffery (Mary's daughter, b 1774).

Thank you, that is top detective work!

Mary and Hannah are similar ages, so it adds weight to the argument that they are sisters.  I'll look into John Mason as well in case his name pops up anywhere else.

I am researching Mary Lester of Scalford, b 1743 and married Charles Morris of Loddington in 1767.

I have not found a birth record for Mary, but in the will of John Lester in 1769 he makes Charles Morris an executor, so I am working on the premise that John is Mary's father, but would like to prove it. His wife is named in the will as "Elizabeth", but I can't find any marriage record.

If anyone knows anything about this family, I would be most grateful.
