Hi Caroline, my GG Grandfather is James O'Gorman originally from Cork, I don't know what age he was when he had his children, but I do know that he died before my grandad was born in 1920. My G grandad Edward has 3 sisters all birth registered in Kilkenny, Mary Kate, Jane & Annie. The reason it might be the same James is that he is recorded as a Sargent major & or recruiting Sargeant so he will have likely had a substantial service history, and highly likely he was in the boer war.

Hey MonicaL, I'm sorry I didn't come back to you, you are absolutely correct, Michael's parents are Donald & Mary, I'm blaming my brother!

Hi Monica, I'm definitely going to give that a try next time I'm up there. We bumped into Dougie Cameron at Dorlin last time we were there, he told us about the bell, I don't think it has been returned/recovered yet! he wanted to hang onto my redheaded daughter!! Honestly, haha she is 21 he was a good 85 if he was a day! he was a highlight though, full of tales! Micheal died in 1933 his dad John Mcd and his mum, Mary MacNeil.
Ann McD is, I think, where you and I cross over on the Dalnabreac/Langal folks, she died in 1938. Her mum and dad were John Macissac McD and her mum Mary McD, and her siblings, John, Angus, Ronald, Catherine & Donald. There are another couple of John & Mary McD's in moidart, around the same time, but, given the christian names, I went for this lot, because, Ann & Michael's children have the same names.
I attached a picture of the plaque from the church, my gg uncles are on it, angus and donald, I also found a news clipping in the oban times with photos of them, which was pretty stunning to see them, unfortunately, it was posting their deaths in the war, but precious none the less.
My dad talks a lot about Kennedys being in the family, but... I'm at a loss where to start with this, do you know of any connections?

what fantastic photos Monica, please can I ask how you managed to get onto the island? also, can I ask if Micheal & Ann McD were buried on the island? I've not been able to find out where my aunty Maryann is buried and thought she might also be one of the more recent graves on there? she died in the 1970's, and lived in the wee white cottage opposite Tioram in Dorlin named for her

Hi there, I'm looking for any information anyone might have about my Uncle Bill who was in the desert rats 8th Army, according to my dad. Unfortunately my uncle bill is no longer with us, I have checked for his name and am sure I found him listed once on a site, William D Smith as Signals, but I can't for the life of me find it again!
Any information would be great
Many thanks

Hi Monica  ;D me again!  I have got Ann' s birth certificate, and you were correct, Mary and John are her parents (dalnabreac) After John (on ancestry) I  have Ranald MacD & Ann McVarish (I have no foundation for these folks at all!) just ancestry defaults

Michael seems to have a sister called Mary, listed as a ploughman, but I am struggling to find him past his dad(who I think is also Michael) I can't find his mother anywhere. Most of the certificates I got are from the church records, the only statutory one I could find is for my g uncle Archie, probably me looking in entirely in the wrong place of Scotland people. The records seem to be very sparse beyond Michael and Ann and I was wondering how far you had managed to go with Ann's line
All the best

Hi Monica, this is way too addictive! I have downloaded the marriage cert for Ann and Michael. Ann is listed from Dalnabreac and Micheal Sheppard (or similar) Cliff, there are 2 witness' but no parents! Michael Mac D (also Dalnabreac) and Donald Mac D very hard to understand where he is listed as being from, it looks like Sangle, but it goes off the page, I think the Priest must have been having a bad day as his writing is pretty illegible! ;D anyway, just wanted to let you know I have looked at the marriage certificate, and yes all this side of the family were staunch Roman Catholics.

Thanks very much for all the info you have given me :)

Hi Monica

Really, thanks so much for taking the time. I have ordered the birth certificate for Angus, my Grandad, who I had never even seen a photo of until about 3  months ago. My dad doesn't really ever talk about his family, but adored his dad, Angus and lost him aged 10, and had to become the head of the household very young, as my Gran O'G didn't cope to well as a result of his loss. my dad has scant memories only that he spent summers in Dorlin with Archie and Mary Ann, I think my Granny Bella was alive for my mum and dads wedding in 1965, but died just after. I'm not sure I have the correct Michael and Ann, the only Michael's birth cert I can find is born in Tyree, not a million miles away from Dorlin, but I'm not sure it's him. I guess I expected them all to be registered in Acharacle or Dorlin, because my aunty Mary Ann said the family had had the croft for about 400 years? which may be fanciful! but that's what my dad thought. It's possibly through Ann, but there are a lot of Ann Mac's listed. The full list of names you posted earlier are the correct family, Angus and John died in the first world war, I saw the plaque with their names on when we visited the Mingarry church in May. I think Charles also died then or as a result of it. I will have a look again about the certificates for the Michael and Ann I think it is tomorrow, and thanks again for all your responses. O'Gorman is most definitely Irish! but like south England it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack, so, hopefully Angus' birth cert might have some useful information
