The Common Room / Surname used as a middle name
« on: Thursday 19 October 23 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Has anyone ever come across family members they are researching that have a surname as their middle name that they have no idea where it came from? I have come across a few that have just stumped me?!? Have no idea where the surname came from? Two are the youngest children and the other one is the oldest and appears to be the only child which seems hard to believe. I have searched and re-searched and have come up empty handed! I was wondering; was it common for the youngest child to have a surname as a middle name? Just curious if anyone has come across this when searching Scottish ancestors. Thanks

Hello,  I have just read these posts and have come across some familiar names that show up in my family tree.  The first is the surname Peterkin and the second one is Moir.  In my family tree Ann Peterkin McBain (sp) (DOB Oct 1797) who married Alexander Anderson and their youngest child was named George Moir McBain (Jan 1840) (sp).  All these events took place in Fife. I Have been trying to find out where the name Peterkin and Moir came from?  I'm wondering if there may be some connection here? Thanks,  Susan

Inverness / Duncan McGregor and Margaret McDonald
« on: Saturday 16 October 21 16:16 BST (UK)  »
Looking for any info on Duncan McGregor who I believe was a Cameron Highlander and his wife Margaret McDonald.  I know for sure they had one son named Neil McGregor who was born in Fort William, Inverness ~1811.  I have found a Susan McGrigor born in this area ~1800 and a Agnes McGregor born in Edinburgh ~1813.  I can't find any other children.  On Neil's death certificate it mentions his parents as Duncan McGregor, Merchant and Margaret McDonald.  I don't think, from my research at least, that Neil was the only male child. I came across a young man living with Neil's family in Edinburgh in 1841 named Donald McGregor.  He was a Dyer apprentice and Neil was a Dyer.  Trying to figure out who this Donald was?  He was 15yrs old in 1841, so would have been born ~1825-1826.  Any help or advise would be greatly appreciated! Cheers, Susan :)

Hi, I too am searching these people! My link is Janet Wood; James Wood and Helen Black's second daughter.  I think James was in the military; when he got out he was a cow feeder living in Paisley?!  My Janet was married in Paisley in 1833 to a Neil McGregor.  Would love to compare info.  Susan

Hey!  I too am researching Neil McGregor and Janet Wood.  Would love to share any info I have and to also find where your line is!  I too have been trying to sort out Neil McGregor for sometime!  I too have only found him; there seems to be no other children that I can find for Margaret McDonald and Duncan McGregor.  Hope to hear from you!

Hi Kirsty,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly!  Yes, very interesting!   it appears that I have two James Andersons that are listed on birth certificates and marriage certificates as Glass and China Merchants?  James Anderson (SR) was born in Glasgow in about 1820, he married a Elizabeth McBain (McBean)sp in November of 1850, in Fife , Scotland.  He and Elizabeth had 8 children one of them being my G Grandfather; George Mc Bean Anderson; born in of August 1858.  My G Grandfather's oldest brother was named James.  He was born in Perth, Scotland in April of 1852.  At this point I' m not too sure what James Anderson's father and mother's names were.  Ill keep checking but perhaps that's where the connection is? Can you give me the actual website ifo to look up the court docs?

Thanks,

looking forward to hearing back,

Susan

Kirsty, I read your posts about James Anderson, China Merchant and wondered whether we were related in some way; way back!  My GGGrandfather was a James Anderson, China Merchant, born 1820 and his son, James Anderson was also a China Merchant, born 1852.  Would love to compare notes.  Hope to hear back from you.
