Hi Christopher,
That could very well be MINE! I "know" that my Johnstons came from County Fermanagh, and if I understand correctly, that is a neighbor to Armanagh (forgive any spelling mistakes I may make...just had some pretty big surgery Tues. of last wk so not steady yet).
My Joseph A. McKee was born ca 1860...actually I think it was July 1860 in an unknown Irish County/townland etc.
His parents were Jane (unknown maiden name), and James McKee (at least that WAS the name on Joseph A.'s death certificate. However his cert. was messed up, as my grandfather or the clerk one was confused...it listed Joe's wife as being his MOTHER! It listed James McKee as his father. Therefore I am fairly certain James was his dad's name.
I found that a Jane McKee came over in 1872, with her children named:
William
Joseph A.
Martin (whom I had never heard of)
and at least 2 daughters, one of whom was a small baby at the time. ..... I am on my laptop as the desktop is in the shop...my genealogy info is not on this one so trying to remember...ha!
In the 1880 census, it showed that Joseph A. and his brother William were living with Jane, their mom, who was 47 years old and already a widow. With them were their sisters, Catherine? , Teresa, Alice and Ann or anne or Anna (again, I've not looked at this line in awhile so I'm not up to speed tonight). The last two children were born in NYC.
This same census ALSO listed Joe as being SINGLE and working for the Long Island RailRoad as a switchman (which he did).
The 1890 census is of course, up in smoke due to a fire or whatever in Washington where all the records were stored. Most info was lost for that decade. In 1900, I found Joseph A. again, living with his wife, Eliza Taggart/Taggert. It said they had been married 19 years I think...anyway, it didn't truly add up, as it said SHE didn't come over until 1882! Of course, that COULD be wrong ... maybe SHE came over in 1872? But this same Joseph is the right Joseph and lived pretty much in the same building in Queens his entire adult life. IN the SAME building was his cousin, Felix McKee! Felix and Mary (his wife) had a couple of children that year also..several actually. ALL of Joe's and Felix's children had pretty much the SAME names! I just realized a few weeks ago, that Felix's SON, Felix JR. was at my dad's wake, in 1959. HIS wife was Eileen or Elinore something like that I think...again, my memory is not trustworthy at this moment in time.
Could you possibly find the info on that household (er, does it list specific names besides Josephs?). This may be his grandfather? If you could, I would be glad to reimburse you by check, but would probably have to have it in U.S. currency (I live in a backwoods village in E. Podunk Illinois lol). Any info I can gain will help tremendously...oh and mine were Catholic. Thank you SOOO much!
