The Common Room / Old fashioned way of saying child payments?
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 12:11 GMT (UK)  »
I've been idly browsing the northants archive catalogue (as you do ::) ) and I came across this:
Bonds against chargeability- James Dainty of Orton (Frances Page, infant lodged in Desborough) 25th March 1794

Is that an old fashioned way of saying our Jim got a bit frisky and now he's got to pay child support?

Occupation Interests / Re: Porter in 1840s Liverpool?

Ah I hadn't thought of the railway!

Unfortunately David drops off the records after 1841; I think he dies in 1849.
I'm still trying to verify his children, the only one I know for sure is:
Robert (born 1809 in Scotland), who notes his da as a porter at his marriage.
James (born 1826 Liverpool)
John (born 1827 Liverpool)
The baptisms I'm *almost* sure are for both of them don't show an occupation..
I think there was also Andrew, born 1811 Liverpool, but I'm still checking that!

Occupation Interests / Porter in 1840s Liverpool?

Title covers it quite well really, what would a porter actually have been doing in 1840?
I'm working on David Anderson, whose recorded as a Porter in 1840 and 1841.. I'd assumed porter was just a slightly upper-market way of saying a docker, but given his address of Parr street, I'm thinking it might have been something more warehouse based?

Anyone know what sort of financial status this would have been? I've been hoping it was quite low down so his sons would be in the Caledonia school records  ::)

Thanks in advance!

The Common Room / Re: James Samuel Wagstaffe Duke

I know this isn't what you are asking but this appears to be his birth

Births Sep 1919
Duke    James S W    Wagstaffe    Blackburn    8e   442

Have you checked trees on Ancestry to see if you can contact his great granddaughter through that?

There seems to be at least three trees featuring his name on Ancestry.  I can't access them as I don't have a sub any more.

This is (I think) the right man. I know very little about him other than family legends and what I've guessed..
Of the ancestry members with him on, I've tried 3; one appears to be his wife who is no longer with us, one wont reply to messages, and the third is the missing Jessica who hasn't been on Ancestry for well over a year  :-\

They certainly had firearms in 1828; I've a diary which recounts various trips on the stagecoaches and he mentions the driver taking pot-shots at something once  ::)

Ok, this is a very long shot but I figure it's worth a try!

I'm looking for any relatives of James Samuel Wagstaffe Duke, who was born (I think) about 1919 and died circa 1988 in Blackburn.
He married Hilda Needham, and they lived for a time around Glasson Dock.

I found his great Grandaughter Jessica via Ancestry a couple of years back, but we lost touch before we could get in proper contact..

If you're a relative of his, please give me a message  :)

The Lighter Side / Re: How did you get into researching?

I'm loving how different reasons brought us all into 'the hunt'!  ;D

I could write an essay on that question alone as I have multiple reasons although this always bugged me, how could I prove it?!

When I was at primary school we were given a project, a family tree, I was laughed at & felt humiliated in front of a whole class being told this was impossible (paternal line)!!! ...

                                                                     Annie
                                                                      1961
                                                    Father 1915
                                                 G/f 1888        1882 G/m
                                        G/gf 1866                       1864 G/gm

You decide whether it's possible/impossible?

Annie (with all the certs.)  ;D

I got laughed at school once when we were given a family tree project and I couldn't fill out anything on my mum's father's line- the teacher was convinced that everyone must know their grandparents.. Got quite a shock when my mum marched in and announced herself to be a b*stard!!

You genius!
Guess I didn't have all the variations after all  ::)
I suppose given the illiteracy, a name could end up spelt however it sounded in the local accent.. I never thought to sound it out in a Chester version!

Yes, I've got all the variations of the name. The boaters appear to have spoken the name as "Mossun" or "Mozin", just to make sure he's good and tricky to locate  ::)
