The Tasmanian Archives also has some information as well.
I’m searching for information about one of my ancestors who emigrated from Scotland in 1856 bound for Tasmania on the ‘Broomielaw’. John McArthur bC1828. I have info about estimated year of birth and his marriage, but can’t seem to go back any further to see where he was born. Both my mum and I have been searching for additional information to try and track them down.
I noticed this evening on a post I found the emigrants had to apply for passage to Tasmania - St Andrews Immigrations Society. In the post it mentioned an advertisement in the Glasgow Courier 4th Dec 1856 seeking applicants. Applicants had to apply through Messrs. McNaughton and Cochrane 163 Ingram St Glasgow. My question is does anyone know if there are any records for McNaughton and Cochrane held anywhere - Scotland or elsewhere which may hold information on the applications. To leave Scotland they would’ve needed to provide details of who there were and where they were from.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Malcolm
