Armed Forces / Re: William Griggs, Grenadier Guards in 1841 in Canada

Thank you

I figured out your post and updated my reply

Emma's daughter Emma bap 1835 as you suggest

Emma Wratten bap 5 May 1811, Sandhurst; died 1901. After William died in 1849 she remarried Wilfred in 1856. Interesting he was in the Grenadier Guards

Agree Mary married James Thornton in 1866 aand migrated to Melbourne. They are buried together

Thank you very much

Armed Forces / William Griggs, Grenedier Guards in 1841 in Canada
« on: Saturday 14 January 23 09:16 GMT (UK)  »
My ancestor, William Griggs, died in the Grenadier Guards Hospital in Westminster in 1849. I have his death record. He was 39. In 1841 he married Mary Muttart in Toronto and there is a lovely record of the birth of their daughter Louisa born in the Anglian Garrison in Quebec in 1842 and further confirmation that William was in the Grenedier Guards.

William was married earlier to Emma Wratten in 1837 in Paddington

I am seeking your advice on how I can locaate William's military record and his marriage (and birth record in Toronto 1820) with Mary, please?

Any insights would be greatly appreciated

Many thanks, Tony

Canada / Re: Muttart Family

Thank you GCE,

There still seems to be some sorting out about for which children Mary Ann Muttart was really the mother. UK GRO says 3 but it would not cover Louisa unless she was also born in the UK (she wasn't)

My aunt married Walter Benham, whose mother was Emily Adelina Griggs, whose father was Wm Henry (m Martha Wake), whose father was William (m Wratten and Muttart) ... then I have his father was Wm (m Jane Auborn) - all settled in Bedfordshire

I have more detail I am trying to validate and share. Do you have Wm Henry's military record? Do you have the Muttart marriage record?

Ill collate my notes later if that is ok. Looks like we are reasonably close cousins genealogy speaking!

Yes Dundee - Only Emily born after William died

My email is antony.thurston@gmail.com

Thank you both for replying

Tony

Hi GCE and Cosmac

I appreciate this is an old thread

I have been researching Wm Henry Griggs/Greggs b1846 so I am very interested in your comments regarding an earlier marriage in England. The GRO shows Muttart to be the MMN for Mary, Wm henry, and Emily. My uncle is descended from Wm Henry who married Martha Wake

Can you say who was the earlier spouse and do you have any earlier detail on the Griggs line, please?

Thanks, Tony

Antrim / Thomas Anderson Servant of Conway Dobbs, Carrickfergus and Ballynure
« on: Sunday 20 February 22 10:40 GMT (UK)  »
I am not sure whether I should post my question in Antrim or Midlothian?

My family is descended from John Anderson (1830 - 1900). I am completely stuck trying to find John's ancestors although I know his family and life in Carrickfergus and then Shankhill from 1845

From an extract of Ballynure Old Church Gravestones I am investigating Thomas (1808 - 1883) as a possible father of John Anderson:

"Erected by Thomas Anderson to the memory of his beloved daughter Alice Jane who departed this life 11 Aug 1858 aged 19 years. Also, his beloved daughter Susan departed this life on 20 Jul 1862 aged 27 years. Thomas Anderson died at Ballynure on 17 Sep 1883 aged 75 years. Also, his wife Jane Anderson died 07 Mar 1888 aged 80 years."

On Thomas's death certificate his occupation is a butler and in the Belfast Newsletter on 22 Sep 1883, his obituary says he was a loyal servant for Conway Dobbs of Dobbs Castle for nearly 60 years.

Thomas's wife Jane died after Thomas and their son John was present at her death. From John's death record in Belfast in 1900 he was born abt. 1830. I am trying to trace Thomas, Jane and John's birth records which are implied around 1808, 1808 and 1830 respectively. In my family, John is described as a serving-man from Edinburgh but the records could be Ireland or Scotland. If  Thomas served Conway for nearly 60 years then roughly 1825 he started working for Conway aged around 16 to 21 years old

I am happy to post any further information. I would be extremely grateful for any steps I can take to unravel the Anderson and Dobbs connection and the origins of Thomas, please

Thank you

For Sale / Wanted / Events / Trying to Find Bourne Ancestry Book on Wybunbury
« on: Tuesday 29 June 21 08:19 BST (UK)  »
Bourne: History of a Family 1647-2001 by Douglas H. Bourne. Published by Delmar Press 2002 who have gone out of business. ASIN B001A01AQS. The focus is Wybunbury parish

I am trying to borrow or buy a new or second hand copy of this book without success. The Cheshire Record Office has a copy and has copied parts for me but are limited by copyright on how much they can copy. I have asked my library to arrange an inter-library loan without success. I live in Hertfordshire and am unable to travel to Cheshire currently. I have also tried a few Cheshire bookshops, Amazon, Google Books and Internet Archive without success

My wife is a Bourne and her ancestors originate from Betley, Madeley and Wybunbury.  I am at a loss at what to do next and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I am happy to provide more detail and share information. Thank you

Lancashire / Re: Help! missing Bournes
« on: Tuesday 19 January 21 12:10 GMT (UK)  »
I have just seen this thread and I am very interested whether your Thomas connects to my Joseph.
My wife is descended from Joseph Bourne born1854 in Tunstall

Joseph's father Thomas Bourne married three times, Susannah Rowley Ford in 1849; Margery Lightfoot in 1858 and Maria Dicken in 1875.

The 1851 census suggests Thomas was born in Manchester in 1828. This record  fits with the first marriage and the birth of their first son Thomas born 1850 (this birth is transcribed incorrectly on ancestry as 1860). This record links Tunstall and Manchester

Thomas marries 3 times and his name changes from Bourne to Burne to Burn. His place of birth changes from Manchester (1851) to Tunstall (1861 and 1871) to Uldom Lancashire (1881) His father’s name changes from Thomas (first and second marriages) to John (third marriage). He was a slip maker in a pottery in 1851 and in his marriage records gives his father’s occupation as a potter.

I am looking for a pottery industry in/near Manchester and transfer of labour to and from Tunstall / Burslem I can investigate? This thread mentions Ralph Mansfield for which I believe the Mansfield family is a small DNA match via Sarah Bourne. I need to check

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Hi Debra

Yes I agree, this calibrates with his new birth year - I can see an index not the actual record

Thank you
