The Common Room / Re: Ancestry Public Trees
« on: Friday 01 November 24 18:54 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you every one for your interest. The question I was really asking was can Family trees be added to MY tree without my knowledge.

Other family trees can link to your tree, but no, family trees can not be added to your tree.  Only you choose what is added to your tree.

Cheers,

That looks like an Ancestry source? And not a UK source?

I don't know, but either way one of them is consistently wrong.  The matter has been reported, but nothing has changed.

Yes, I noticed the reversal in the past week or so here on Ancestry.ca.  Very annoying.

The other date issue for me is that the UK Death Registration sources have the dates in US format (mm/dd/yyyy) instead of UK (dd/mm/yyyy).  So any day 12th or less is switched to the month.  I have begun to just assume it's switched and put the UK date in my tree.  I reported this to Ancestry in March 2024 but so far nothing has changed (not holding my breath).

I have never had a date from UK Death Registration in anything other than normal UK format (dd/mm/yyyy).

Hi.  Took me a while to find one.  It's actually the UK Death Index, not Registration.  The person's birthdate is 6 May, and date of death is 1 Dec.  On one record, both dates are in the incorrect format, but on the other they are both correct.  (Additional sources were found that confirmed the correct dates.)

This change is fairly recent, as I have been working on my tree regularly for some time.

If enough users complain, Ancestry may go back to the original settings.

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry Pro Tools
« on: Monday 15 July 24 18:12 BST (UK)  »
I signed up for Pro Tools today at $10.00 CAD (Edit: $10.00 USD!), and I am of the exact same opinion.  Tree Checker should be part of the regular subscription.  MyHeritage has a really good one that I use occasionally and then match the results back to Ancestry.  A good check is are siblings born too close together, are the parents too young/old, etc.  I find that helpful.

The advanced DNA / Matches is also interesting.  Some matches that had zero shared matches now have tons!  Not sure how this will help at present, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I have tried Family Tree software and honestly I have not been able to figure out how to use it properly.  I'm not able now to fork out the money, so I'll see how I fare with Pro Tools.

The Common Room / Another annoying new Ancestry feature - Notifications
« on: Friday 16 September 22 16:09 BST (UK)  »
For those who use Ancestry for their trees - a new 'feature' has been added to the top right of your screen - Notifications!  If you haven't looked at it, it lights up red (why not green?) when something is added.  The additions are, for the most part, completely useless IMHO.

For instance: "we may have found a mother/father for XX"; "You shared a picture from 'user', what else might 'user' be able to share? Message 'user'"; etc., etc.,

They asked for Feedback LOL...  I told them to get rid of it pronto and fix the useless messaging system instead!

The Common Room / Re: Ancestry trees on the blink?

And I thought it was my PC acting up!  The Ignore button has not been working properly for me over  here in the Great White North either.  I also use Chrome.  Glad to know it's not just me :)

The Lighter Side / Re: WDYTYA New Series

I only recognize Sue Perkins.
We don’t get the show here, unfortunately.

You can find current (and some past) episodes on YouTube.  The only annoying thing is that they are all broken up into about 5-10 minute segments, but they are there.
