Their children's birth certs should include date and place of parents' marriage. They may have passed themselves off as married though!

Monica

Annie died in December in 1892 and he married Christina in February 1893.  I am wondering if its possible he and Annie weren't together in 1891 and thats why I can't find them together on a census! Although I can't seem to find anyone, so who knows! Lol!

Hi Rachael

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

Just curious. Was James McGimpsey previously married before meeting Christina? Could this be him in 1901?

James McGimpsey 27 coal miner b. Ireland
Maggie McGimpsey 26 b. England
James McGimpsey 7
Barbara McGimpsey 4
Thomas McGimpsey 2
Agnes McGimpsey 8 Months

Address: 127 Roman Rd, Motherwell, Dalziel

Monica

Hi Monica,

Thank you so much :)

He was married before Christina, but it was to Annie (or Ann) maiden name Thom, and she was born in Motherwell.  I have been struggling to find him in the 1891 census but have just found him with christina in 1901, and it would appear they have 3 children together (from what I can tell on the census).  This family is driving me crazy lol!

Thank you for the info though, McGimpsey isn't really a common name around here (motherwell, scotland) so I'll take note of the census you found, as they will likely be related!

:) :) You're welcome.

I think there was some wild transcription problem....don't you think that "William" the wife is probably Annie?

Is this her death? (SP)

MEGEMCEY ANNIE age 31  1892 Dalziel

Maureen

Thats her! She died in the december of 1892 and James remarried in the february 1893, I considered the fact that maybe they weren't living together, but he was still down as the widow on her death record.  That just makes things confusing though lol! Maybe he was just quick to find a new wife lol!

Don't ask me  ::) but are they listed as James McJeamcy and family (Ancestry 1891).

Craigneuk 3 Thatch Row Occ: Iron puddler

Maureen

I hadn't seen this one before, and it gives me another spelling to add to my list!  It could be him with room for error on the age, as his wife died in 1892 and the address was 3 Belhaven Row, I know some places were called various names!

Is this is them, I wonder where Annie is, she didn't seem to be sick for long or I would have suspected she was in hospital!

Definitely gives me a new line of enquiry! Thank you so much!

Sorry about that lack of info! I've been at it all day and my brain is sore lol!

James was born in Glasgow (I suspect Tollcross area) in 1855/56 and Annie was born in Motherwell in 1859.

In the 1881 they are living with Mary McGimpsey, James' Widowed mother (although it is transcribed on FindMyPast as McGimprey).

Edit: I have been unable to source James' birth record so far, wondering if the other census records I have are wrong and he was born in ireland, or if theres just a really weird spelling of McGimpsey I haven't come across yet)

Lanarkshire / James McGimpsey 1891 Census - Lanarkshire area

I'm posting in the hopes that someone recognises the name, or someone has better skills than me to try and find my great great grandfather James McGimpsey and his family in the 1891 Census! My great grandfather David was born in 1884, so he would be around 7 on the census.  He was born in Russel Street in Wishaw, and I know the family spent the rest of their time in and around Craigneuk!

James married Annie Thom in 1879 with the address listed as 20 Shieldmuir, I know Annie died in December 1892 and James went on to marry Christina Cameron in 1893. He died in 1902! I have the census record for 1881 where James and Annie are living with James' widowed mother and his family in Great Eastern Road, Barony, but I cannot find anything afterwards.

Any advice or help would really be appreciated!

Rachael :)

Hi Tracey,

I appreciate this is an old post, and you may not even be on here anymore, but I just thought I would pop in. My great great grandfather is James McGimpsey, Christinas First husband! I was just wondering if you are aware of any children they had together? I know they weren't married for long!

Rachael :)
