Norfolk / Bill Bailey Norfolk Yeomanry - Henry W Bailey?
« on: Friday 11 March 22 02:07 GMT (UK)  »
I inherited this postcard which was sent from my GG-Grandfather to his wife and child in 1915. In his message he mentions that the man on the front of the PC is "that Bill Bailey what I told you about".

At the time of writing he was serving in the Norfolk regiment, and I recognise Bill Bailey's cap badge to be of the Norfolk Yeomanry.

Forces war records lists only 1 Private Bailey who served in the Norfolk Yeomanry during WW1, Henry W Bailey. Service numbers 2884 & 140244. I have seen the medal index rolls but didn't get any extra information from them.

I have made the assumption that the middle W -> William -> 'Bill', but I'm unable to make the next step to decipher which Henry William Bailey alive at the time is the one that served in the Yeomanry.

TIA

Thanks all, so very helpful!

Walter William Ruff was his older brother so that fits too.

Thanks again!  ;D

Bedfordshire Lookup Requests / WW1 Records - RUFF, Arthur
« on: Sunday 14 June 20 16:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm building a family tree and I've been told by a relative (Arthur Ruff's nephew) that Arthur served in WW1. I'm struggling to track down any records that fit.

Things I know:

Arthur Ruff
b. 24/04/1899
m. 1930 (Florence Ellen Jeffs)
d. 1971

In 1911 he was living with his parents and 4 of his siblings in Great Barford, near Bedford.

Father: William Ruff (b.1866)
Mother: Elizabeth Young (b.1863)

I will keep searching, but if anyone has any bright ideas, I'd love to hear them.
Thanks in advance.  :)

Have you got the marriage certificate for George?

If so what occupation does it have for his father and who were the witnesses?

I don't personally, will check with family and if not order one. Cheers.

Am not familiar with Fosdyke - where is it near do you know?

South of Boston, towards Spalding.

Did you group them by hand or by using a clustering tool like GeneticAffairs? I wonder if the "auto-tree" function from GeneticAffairs would throw up any names you could start from.

It can be frustrating when you know yoy only need to stumble across one cousin to solve it!

Happy hunting.

Lincolnshire Lookup Requests / George Moor(e) born Fosdyke c.1833 missing census

Trying to track down the correct 1841 census for George Moore, or his parents.

In 1857 he marries Elizabeth Gee. All the censuses from 1861 - 1911 list his birth as Fosdyke 1833-34.

There is a baptism record for George Moor in Fosdyke on 20 Jan 1833, listing parents William and Ann. I think Ann's surname may be Blancher/Blanchard.
FHL Film Number: 989788

It looks like George was a servant (aged 17) in 1851, so the 1841 will be the only one to list his parents.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks all!

I can see that it is a dreadfully written "shoemaker" but that it must relate to the entry below.

Perhaps I'll register a complaint to make sure this census taker uses block capitals in future! ;D

Is it anything to do with entry below which has been crossed out?

End bit looks like mother/maker/worker (sorry I'm no help)

Thanks. I think the deleted entry below says "Ag. Lab", removing the stem of the L would make the word above be maker/mother/worker you're right.

She grows up to be a dressmaker, but the beginning doesn't really look like dress.
