Armagh / Re: CULLEN'S of Armagh

Yes, this is definitely the same family.  My records were given to me and I have yet to verify all this information, but I show the following:

Roger Cullen (spelled Rodger in my records) born abt 1799 married Catherine Clark born abt 1799.  I'm also showing the same 5 children, all born in Armagh, but Armagh is not always listed exactly the same.

Margaret  B 1819
James  B 1822
Eugene Owen  B May 29, 1825  D Nov 27, 1905
Denis  B 1828
Jane  B 1832

Eugene Owen (if I have the name correct) was my great grandfather.

My records are very sketchy, as the person who did all the research is my aunt on my mother's side.  The Cullens were on my father's side, so there isn't as much information.  In addition, my aunt is now 98, so all of her work was done by visiting libraries, cemeteries, churches, court houses, etc, either in the US or Ireland.  Some of the records are still in hardcopy and in need of review.  I'm hoping to get through it a little bit at a time.  Let me know if there is anything I can provide.  Thank you for the post!

That seems amazing.  I haven't been able to find anything on her, but after doing some research today, started thinking that even though she seems to have been born in Ireland, maybe her family originated in Scotland.  Of course, I'm just jumping to conclusions.  It's too early in my search to know anything.  Would you be willing to share any information on her and her past?

Thanks again Davidft!  I'm going to take your advice and try contacting A.  I'm also going to see if my cousins will get tested.  Fingers crossed...

Thank you all for your responses.  I wasn't aware of that DNA tool, so that should prove to be very helpful.  I still don't understand why my mom would be a more distant relative than my siblings and I, but am beginning to really lean toward thinking the closer relationship is coming from my dad's side and there's some sort of distant relationship between my parents.  Both had family members who lived in County Armagh, Ireland.  Maybe I could get some cousins from my dad's side to get tested.  Maybe that could shed some light on the subject?

I'm new to genealogy and new to this forum, but joined based on a Google search that turned up Cullens of Armagh.  My grandmother's father was Dennis Quinn Cullen and her mother was Susan Ann Kelly Cullen, Dennis' first wife.  My grandmother's name was Mary Frances Cullen Mower.  We really have no information on Susan Ann Kelly Cullen, except that we know she died in 1895, when our grandmother was young and we know Dennis was re-married to Mary Freeman.  We know they had 2 children, only one of whom I knew.  Her name was Anna Cullen Hagan.  Based on my read of this string, it sounds like the best way to trace Susan Kelly's roots is to check Catholic parish registers.  I followed the link below and was a little overwhelmed.  How do you determine which parish to check?  Or, do you just start with the county and go through the parishes one by one?  Thanks for any help!

davidft - Thanks for the reply.  I have no idea what I'm doing here.  The testing was through 23 and me and they are the ones that indicated the match was from my mother's side.  I suspect that to be due to the fact that there was some match on my mother's side.  I failed to mention earlier that my son was also tested.  Here are all of the results of the match to A:

My mother - 6 cM / 1 segment
My mother's sister - 0 cM / 0 segment
My sister - 82 cM / 7 segments
My brother - 127 cM / 7 segments
Me - 113 cM / 8 segments
My son - 76 cM / 5 segments

Please let me know if there's something I'm leaving out.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / DNA Mystery - Please Help

My mother, her sister, one of my sister's, one of my brother's and I all had our DNA tested.  Individual A showed up as a possible 3rd cousin (mother's side) to me, so I compared A to myself and all my relatives mentioned above.  I show up with 8 segments matching A, my sister and brother match 7 segments, my mom matches 1 segment and my aunt matches no segments.  Results for cM were similar.  I know nothing about DNA, but it doesn't seem logical to me that my mom would have fewer segments matching A than would my siblings and I.  And my aunt has none.  Wouldn't he have had to inherit the DNA from her if it was on her side?  My father died, so we can't have his DNA tested, but I'm thinking my father would have had more segments matching and that's why we have more segments matching than our mom.  Does that seem likely?  If so, does it also seem likely that somewhere way back, my mom and dad shared ancestors?
