Antrim Completed Look up Requests / Re: Dan Barr's Shop COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 08 October 19 16:45 BST (UK)  »
Despite "completed" still some queries remain.  Have replied before but specifically to help enquiry about detail of birth for Daniel Barr who started the barber shop, I have record of 1911 census showing him at 50 Cromac Street along with his wife Catherine Lavery and family. Daniel was born around 1860 which can be deduced from this census.  My father now aged 90 remembers being sent for regular haircuts (short back and sides which he hated) to Daniel's shop. I believe at least one of his sons also worked as a barber in this shop.

There is a Robert Barr back in my family, b. 1887 and if I have it right, lived to a ripe old age -  died in 1984!   He was married to Mary McErlean b. 1895  d. 1989 ... another good long life.  Children I have recorded as: Robert (b. ??) , Annie (b 1918) James (b. 1921) Daniel (b. 1922), Kathleen (b. 1925) and Joseph (b. 1930).  Would love that this is the "Bob Barr" secretary/manager of the great Belfast Celtic..   I descend from Robert's sister Mary (b. 1890).  Am still trying to identify Robert's father's (John Barr)  ancestry ... so far I have John's parents as Daniel Barr (b. 1827) and Maria Weir (b. 1830) .. would love to hear from anyone who has more information either on Robert Barr or the ancestry of Daniel Barr and Maria Weir.

Hello, I too am researching.  I descend from Daniel Barr b. 1827 and wife Maria Weir through their son John Barr (b. 1857).  No. 48 Verner Street Belfast seems to have featured across the generations , with Daniel Barr (above) and his sons Daniel (b. 1860) who was a barber and John (above) having lived there.  Others born to Daniel and Maria were Alexander, James, Elizabeth Jane, Ellen and Mary.   Elizabeth Jane and Ellen died very young.

Interestingly there is an Alexander Barr born about 1790 who died in Verner Street in January 1857.  Possibly an unrelated "Barr" but am wondering if Alexander was parent to Daniel Barr (1827).  Alexander Barr had a draper's shop on the High Street and sold various soft furnishings and other items, particularly woollens.  I have found myriad old advertisements placed by Alexander from the Belfast Commerical Chronicle.

I am also trying to find out more about Daniel Barr b 1827 and wife Maria Weir (b. 1930), both born in Belfast.  Maria was born (along with twin Thomas).  Maria's mother is recorded as Mary Clarke, but that is as far as I have got so far.  Hope this might help a little.

I see that the discussion is marked completed, only just joined RootsChat.  Daniel Barr (the barber) - his father Daniel was my 3rd great grandfather, Dan the barber's brother - John - being my 2nd great grandfather.  Daniel Barr b. 1827 was married to Maria Weir b. 1830 all in Belfast.  I have collected a fair bit of family tree information, but only going as far back as Daniel Barr and Maria Weir at this stage, although I do know that Maria had a twin brother Thomas and their mother was Mary Clarke.
