Australia / Re: Elizabeth BOUGHTON

No, definitely not. There were no family in Tasmania. Elizabeth married George Smith and they had resided in the gunning Dalton Yass area for the rest of their lives. Their children married members of the Brown family who were prominent Wesleyan Methodists in the area, which is why. We know a fair bit about that side of the family and family movements. There is no family lore stating we had ancestors in Tasmania.

Hi,
May I ask how you came to know Elizabeth Boughton (Broughton) came to be on the ship "Layton"?

Elizabeth is my 3xgt grandmother who married George Smith, a convict, in Sutton Forrest.
I have only just started researching this branch of the family, and George is my first convict that I have found. I

Elizabeth is listed Elizabeth Sarah Broughton on one of her daughter's marriage certificate (my 2x gt grandmother) and my gt grandfather carries Boughton as his middle name.

I know that she came free, and was 21 when she married George, although her maiden name is listed as Broughton in the parish register.

Any insight into how you came to find her on any shipping list would be appreciated, as I have not found a document that states when she arrived in Australia.
Thanks.

Of course, electoral rolls! Will continue the hunt. Thanks for the suggestions.

Thanks so much!
Certainly adds to my picture of the times. How rough it must have been to be imprisoned in a hulk awaiting the unknown time when one could leave!

Hi,

Not really after a specific look up, more a request for suggestions.

My dad, in his old age, has become curious as to the employment of his father during the 1930s Sydney depression era.

We know what he did during the war, and afterwards, but as the depression was a bit before my dad's time, he has become curious. He has a strong feeling his dad was working and not out of a job, but not sure doing what.

Any suggestions how one might go about this type of research? Totally understand that we might never know!

Thanks for reading.

Thanks so much.
Lots to digest here. So it would seem he was on a hulk prison before being transported to Australia.
Do you know if it would be the norm to have transferred between prison hulks before boarding the final convict ship to Australia?

It is interesting that it lists him as chimney sweeper. His marriage register says labourer, and another reference says farm hand, which would tie in with the sort of work he would have done later in life.

Every other detail seems to fit, including age, except the job.

Thanks for helping.

Sussex Lookup Requests / George Smith - Marquis of Hastings
« on: Thursday 17 July 25 12:59 BST (UK)  »
Hi, it's been forever since I've done any searching of family history so apologies if I am going about this incorrectly.

I have recently learnt that an ancestor of mine, George Smith, was a convict who was transported to Australia on the Marquis of Hastings (2) in 1827, aged 24. (NOT to be confused with the other George Smith alias King who also traveled on the same boat!)
One site states that he was Brighthelmstone (?) but silly me didn't bookmark the site and I can't find that information again. ::)

I have also found that he was apparantly tried at Lewes 19 December, 1825. Another site states that he was convicted at Sussex Special Session of Gaol Delivery. Are these the same thing? If not, what do these mean?

I would love it if someone could look these up, but understand if it's too much. At the very least I would love to understand what these documents are and the type of information that would be included. With such a common name, I know I don't have much of a hope of going any further back to finding his parents, etc. but trying to understand his crime and what it was would help colour in this ancestor of mine.

Kind regards,
Jen

Hi em79,

I haven't been on rootschat in ages bu got an email saying you had replied to this topic.

if you check on my previous postings I've done a fair bit on my line regarding Alice Ormshaw daughter of Catherine adn William Ormshaw. I've got their whole family mapped out.

William and Catherine Ormshaw are my 4xggrandparents. Their daughter Alice married a Thomas Rudd. I found out about the Ormshaw connection largely to an illegitimate orphan further down the track who had his surname changed to Rudd.

If what you say is correct, then we may well be related. Its a small world!!

If you want more information just pm me, though i dont have everything on hand. It's now at my parents house but shouldn't be too much of a problem for me to retrieve within the next week :)

Looking forward to hearing from you

Thanks for that John,

It seems I may have gone up the wrong tree.

Looking at the Sussex weald site seems to indicate so, but then it makes it all the more frustrating when parent names haven't been included on certificates (unusual when the certificates are Australian).

Never mind, I will continue poking around and see if I can gather soem more firm evidence before going on yet another wild  goose chase!

Thanks for all your help tho, much appreciated :)
