Caernarvonshire / Re: Patronymics Patterns
« on: Saturday 13 July 24 15:35 BST (UK)  »
Two families one on Lleyn not much patronymics but as for the one from Nantle/through Llanberis to Bethesda I can see a forename pattern through to mid C19th.  Don't rely on official records - written for the English by English recorders who were used to fixed surnames. There's no rule as such to use, just family tradition. You could tell which generation's Robert you were referring to by using the surname as we use jnr snr.  Mair

Can i just throw another spanner in the works then

Considering that the enumerators did not really care about the information they were collating as it was Welsh and they were English if they were enumerating in Carnarfon then the default parish of birth was 9 times out of 10 llanbeblig - sorry

but it was the same all over......my gg grandfather was born in Llanllechid according to the census but I know from his birth certificate (now i finally have it after many years of hunting it down) and family stories that he was born in the neighbouring parish of Llandegai - its so frustrating but its part of history itself

Hi Quarryman

Dolwenith is still there just SE of Llanllyfni.  It is mentioned on Melville Richards list of places for around 1770 so its been around a while!

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01owk/   and zoom in a level  and you should spot it on the map

On Nantlle.com there is a posting from a few years ago which fits to the immediate previous occupants of Dolwenith.

Despair makes a good point - patronmics may wel be involved as the families around there seem to be using the naming pattern.

Good Hunting

Hello Eduardo

I sense you like looking and seeking for him - so if you put William's bardic name "Glan Caeron" into Google the hits returned are really fruitful - pictures, papers and letters

Good hunting

For the split of parishes within the registration districts

Bangor civil regards districts were indeed spread over the mainland and Anglesey

Replying to two subjects here

The chapel in Braich Melyn could well be a meeting house the literal translation is Chapel Barely ! So Merchcymraeg could be punting the right way on that one!

And for possible burial records for Llanllechid can I direct Hdefer to www.yffor.com where for a donation you can have a months access to parish records - it confirmed some of my Rowlands bits n bobs.

Once the birth certificate was confirmed then the hunch would be too!
