Hi Anthony,

Thank you so much for doing this .
By the sounds of it it was typical Glasgow weather .
I live in London so that's why I couldn't visit the cemetery but am hoping to come up to Glasgow perhaps April/May , when the weather hopefully is a bit warmer.
I hope to visit the Mitchell library when I am there and if I have time maybe the cemetery .
Is the Cemetery in or near London Road ? as that is where a lot of my ancestors lived.

It looks to be a very well kept cemetery.

You're very welcome - yes the Cemetery is right on London Rd - see plan/map here -

I'm also happy to try and answer any local questions - I'm from the area or indeed help out at the Mitchell as I'm there regularly researching my own FT.

best wishes

Anthony

Hi, how easy is it to find lairs? My great grandmother Agnes Riddell (nee McCue) is buried in St Peters Dalbeth - section 20, lair 823. I will be visiting Glasgow soon and would love to find her grave but don't even know if there is a headstone. Many thanks

Hi likewise for yourself I suspect your relative is in an unmarked grave.  No such evidence recorded as to why I believe the lair is in this photo but I did find stones marked with lair numbers before and after 823, so this spot is roughly where 823 should be, note there were no stones immediately visible with Riddell or McCue.

I only had a very wet but short lunch break to check so I will return for both yourself and Skippy to try to verify my findings and again I'm happy to meet you there if possible to show you where I believe the lair is.

On weekdays there are Cemetery staff available who I'm certain would help specify exactly where each lair is.

best wishes

Anthony

Hi Skippy

I was in Dalbeth today for a very short time but the weather was horrible and I wasnt therefore able to spend as much time as I'd have liked.

My initial findings are that I suspect your ancestor is in an unmarked grave or where a headstone has been removed/vandalised etc.

This stone is very close to your Lair 255 in Section 16:

The 'Hughes stone is at Section 16, lair 259:

I stepped back from 259 to approx 255 and as I said I believe the grave is now unmarked:

The two small stones in the immediate foreground are in the row behind your ancestor.  I believe your ancestor is resting in the spot immediately in front of these stones (towards bottom of the picture).

I'd be happy to meet you and show how I arrived at this - I coudl of course have made a mistake.

Hope this helps

Anthony

Hello,

I wonder if I could take you up on the offer to find headstones .
A lot of my ancestors were buried at Dalbeth/St.Peters but the only one I can find with a Plot number is Henry Wright who was buried on 20/3/1922.
Plot number is 6561 Lair 255, Section 16, Division W .
Just curious to find if there are any other relatives buried in the same lair,
I don't live in Scotland so any help would be great,
thank you

Absolutely, I’d be delighted to have a look.

I can’t promise I’ll find anything but I’m relatively close by and always happy to try.

I’ll keep you posted.

Anthony.

That would be great, would really appreciate that. Won’t be in Glasgow until the end of February. Thanks again.

No problem, I’ll try to get down at some point this week.

Very interesting as I too have family married by "William Robertson Minister Elders Church" with a location given as 20 Hopetoun Place in 1870.

So do we think this was the Ministers house?

thanks

A
