Lancashire Lookup Requests / 1911 lookup
« on: Saturday 02 July 11 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
Would anyone by chance have access to the original copy of the 1911 census return of a David Gowan, born in Cork, Ireland ?

I've seen translations of the original and am unsure if they are completely accurate.
I'm particularly interested in the part of Cork he was from
thanks

Brendan

 Hi,

I really don't know if he continued his military service  -
I don't have full access to Pension papers etc so am presently gathering as much information on him as I can which might help predetermining if the information in pension papers would be useful or not.

I know very little about pension and attestation papers - Can I ask  - at what stage in his life / career would pension / attestation papers be drawn up ?

In 1911 census both Arthur and Philip were student teachers.

His father served in the Royal navy  - both Arthur and his brother Philip J. ( sometimes James P.) (and possibly brother George) served in WW1 and were both Liuet in RFA.

From Arthur's medal card his forwarding address was to B. Guiana c/o "the Rupununi Dev. Company" - on the card however this was then crossed out and the new address was c/o "J. Balasch, 4 Robb ST, Guiana, BG".

As far as I understand the Rupununi Company was setup with the support of the Colonial Government of Guiana and capital from British Business men.

based on this I was of the opinion that he might have left the Military -
Can I ask  - is it normal to be considered / addressed by your military rank ie : Lieutenant A J Going from British Guiana at complimentary dinner in 1924  - if you had already left the military service ?

HI Maudarby,

yes  - thanks, I had spotted that - based on this I assumed he had it leased  - until his death - so I guess the significance of the Lamb and Flag Inn is not that much  - except that it is the last address I have for him.

I should say that the age of this Arthur J does not exactly match the boy born in Dorset  -
Death cert says aged 62  - for birth year of 1892
BDM says born in 1890.

So I'm not 100% certain it's him  - but for now he is the closest I've got.

thanks Mo,

yes the mention of 'Step daughter' is suggesting  there were no children - but would be nice to confirm.
Out of interest  - do you think it is possible to search for the existence of a Will - I'm not sure if this is possible or how to go about this but it might give me a new lead ?

thanks for your offer of checking at the library  - anything you find would be well received.

Wow - Thanks to all who have replied ..

Sorry - I may not have made myself clear at the start.....

Arthur from Dorset is the guy I'm looking at.  Yes his father was Hotel Proprietor in Southampton. I'm trying to find what happened to each of the children and if there are any current day decendents of these children  - including Arthur.
I don't have Arthur's marriage.

Of His siblings:
I know Ellen married Louis O'Sullivan and had at least two daughters ( in southampton) - after that I'm lost.

I know Philip James has WW1 medal cards  - the last I have of him is in the US where he tried to sign up for WW2 -  beyond that I'm lost.

I know Arthur has ww1 medal cards and had a connection to B Guiana - but couldn't find any more on him  - until I came across a death cert for Arthur J Going  - the age does not fit exactly - but I'm hoping it is him.

The detail on the D Cert says he died on 1954 in Slade Hospital, , he was the landlord of the Lamb and Flag. His informant was his Stepdaughter N.M Hargreaves ( not H.M Hargreaves  - sorry for the earlier error) of 87 rakes House Rd, Nelson Lancs.

There is also a Mary Anne and George in this family. I have traced Mary Anne and found current decendents ( unfortunately they are unaware of the rest of her siblings)
George has disappeared  - he is not in the family unit in the 1911 census but he is still alive at that time  - after that I've lost him - possibly killed in ww1  but I have no evidence.

There is a lot of detail here and anything anyone can do to help trace current decendents would be most welcome.
I'm happy to concentrate on Arthur but if anyone has anything on the others - I'd be delighted hear from you.

Out of curiosity Mosie  - Can you tell me how/ where you located him coming back into England ? ( I'm just trying to familiarize my self with  the search tools that are available ?

Once again -  many thanks for your responses - hopefully I'll be able to move on a step closer.
regards
Brendan.

Hi I'm looking for anyone with information or a connection or how I could connect with the above lady.

I have the death cert of a Arthur Joseph Going, died 1954 - at the time he owned / lived at the Lamb and Flag pub, St Giles Oxford.

H.M Hargreaves was present at death and is stated as his Step daughter. At that time she lived at rakes House Rd, Nelson, Lancs.

any help would be appreciated.

Hi Adam,

Yes  - That was a type on my part - apologies.
Incidentally I was wondering if you know where in Ireland Edmond was born ?

On the Going surname  - I have read much of the information on the Robert Going of Tipperary  - I believe my Going/ Gowen group can trace back to to a Michael Gowin - He died in 1798 and is buried in Cappagh, Co Cork.
His headstone states he was born in in 1725  - but I have no record of where but by 1766 he was living in Cappagh, Cork.
His name is spelt Gowin and further down on the headstone is the name / word Mac Gabann.  Further down again are references to his decendents and their names are spelt Gowen. ( Though I can confirm from my research that the Going spelling was also used at some stage)

So the name seems to have gone from Gowin -> Going -> Gowen over the generations - ( Personally I have a feeling the reference to the Going spelling in my group may have been clerical errors )
This group were mainly Farmers and Blacksmiths - and Mac Gabhann being the Irish/ Gaelic  for Smith seems to tie in with that.

Hi Adam,
Thanks very much for your reply.

Your reference to Edmond Going son of Edmond Going and Ellen Hays is very interesting ...

I can confirm the Philip James Going I mentioned was baptized in Ireland in 1851 to parents Edmond Going and Ellen Collins.
I am also aware of the rich history available of the Goings of Tipperary - however this Philip was born in Cappagh, County Cork.
This pocket of Goings from county Cork seem to have a seperate history to the Tipperary Goings but I am open to anyone who has evidence that suggests they are connected?

While records in the Early 1800s of the Cork Goings show the surname spelt 'Going'  - all present day decendents now spell their surname 'Gowen'  - apart from Philip mentioned above.

regards
