Fife / Re: HORSBURGH, JAMES, F.R.S.

I have information on a James Horsburgh who lived in Lochmaloney House not far from Kilmany in Fife. A relative, James Greig, of whom I am a direct descendant was reported as working for him. In the 1861 Census he was working as a general servant to James Horsburgh, Landed proprietor, and was living in accommodation in Lochmalony Mansion in Kilmany. He had worked in Lochmaloney house for over 20 years.

If this is the same James Horsburgh, then I have information and photographs of Lochmaloney House.

Thank you for this information. I have looked down my Greigs and they do not seem to match via dob. The closest I have is John Greig born 1786 but his father was William Greig. There were certainly a lot of Greigs in Fife and its difficult to feel that they weren't related, its just piecing them together is the problem.

Regards and thanks.

Hi,

My family the Greig family of Fife have a seriries of Philps. James Greig dob 14.8.1788 was married to Christian Philp dob about 1796. Her parents were William Philp born 1753, died 25.2.1814 in Logie, Fife. His wife was Christian Kay born 1753.

I have the names of the progeny of Christian Philp.

Is this of any use to you?

Regards,

Many thanks Anne, this was most helpful advice and I found a lot more information than I expected. I had tried similar entries in the death index search facility without luck. I obviously omitted some of the fields you suggested.

With appreciation,

Thanks Ambly,

Where was your source for the death of Christian Greig (previously Philp)? I have searched on the Scotlands people website to find that there are no search matches under deaths for her in1861, or between 1841 - 1871 in Fife.

I cannot find her mentioned in the census in 1861 in Fife either, nor any wills or testaments lodged at Cupar between 1841 to 1871.

How did you come across this information. searching for James Greig was just as fruitless.

Regards,

Greig seeker

Thanks for this info, and apologies for the delay in responding. I was aware of the siblings to David, and had matched them all to the IGI sensus for verification.

Christian Philp was born in 16 Feb 1791, and her father's name was William Philp. I have no details about her mother's name, nor her parents dates of birth, although she came from Logie in Fife.

I have searched the 1841 Kilmany and Logie census information to find other Greigs, however the most promising is a William Greig born in Kilmany on 8 Mar 1786,whomay have been a brother to James Greig, except I can find no information linking them apart frm surname and proimity of dwelling.

Where should I look next?

Regards,

Fife / Kilmany in Fife gravestones

Are there any members of Rootschat who live in or around Kilmany in Fife? I have an earlyfamily member called James Greig who was born about 1789 and who married a Christian Philp on 22 Oct 1814 in Kilmany. I have verified the 10 descendants born in Kilmany. He may have been brother to a William Greig born 8 Mar 1786 in Kilmany. I can find no reference to James Greig in the 1841 census, hence assume he may have died after the birth of his last son Peter born 13 Jan 1839. It is highly likely he will be buried in the Kilmany graveyard, which may offer new information.

Ju,
Many thanks for this very useful information. I have Found a William Greig born in Kilmany married to an Helen Imry, with his parents William Greig and Ann Heane, by searching the IGI. Although he may be a brother to James Greig, I cannot find any reference to a James Greig born about 1789 in Kilmany, hence I cannot link the two together as family.
