Hi Tracey,
I have uploaded a copy of the marriage certificate - hope it’s visible. If not, I can try sending it to you via dm.
Phoebe identifies her father as “Samuel Hughes, Hawker”, so I think we can be quite confident that this is indeed your great grandmother.
The children mentioned in Milliepede’s message are correct to the best of my knowledge.
I see you have also found Isaac’s divorce petition against Phoebe from 1896 where he mentions Joseph Benham. Interesting that in 1897 Phoebe gave birth to a son and named him Joseph.
It seems Phoebe’s marriage to Isaac was a difficult one, as I have also found some newspaper articles where Phoebe brought charges of assault against her husband. If you have access to a newspaper search, look for “Frondigan” as this will probably give you the best results.
Hope this helps. Happy to take a deeper dive on the children and let you know if I find anything if you’d like xx

Thanks for your reply. I believe we are talking about the same person.
Prior to John Davis, Phoebe was married to Isaac Frondigoun in 1891, with whom she had four children. She also gave birth to a son called Joseph in 1897 who unfortunately died soon after birth.
I wonder if this is the child you were referring to but the workhouse got the year wrong?
I have a copy of the marriage certificate and a little bit more info but not sure if you already have these? Happy to send them to you if you would like x

I have had a look and have found some info but not sure if it’s the same Phoebe Hughes.
Do you know who raised your grandfather and where the surname Davis comes from?

I have found a birth record that I believe may be that of your great-grandmother Annie.
I was intrigued by the information you provided and I wondered what happened to Eddie’s mother, Sabina Scamp, as I could not find a death record for her.
In my experience of researching my own traveller ancestors, I found they sometimes had a tendency to use different names, so I began to wonder if Sabina Scamp and Elizabeth Lee were actually the same person.
With this in mind, I searched Kent birth records of the period using the surname Scamp and found:
Mary Ann Scamp born 26th July 1908 in Blean, Kent. The mother is Sabina Scamp, a hawker. No father is listed but this is not surprising as her parents were not legally married at the time of her birth (also very common amongst travellers of the period). I believe this also points to Annie and Eddie being full siblings, not step siblings.
I have tried to attach the pdf for you to view. I hope this helps.

Travelling People / Re: Jones family, hawkers, Dartford area of Kent

Hello

I realise this is an old post but I only came across it recently whilst looking for information about my own travelling ancestors from Sussex and Kent. I believe I may have found the birth registration of your ancestor Ann Jones, though she is listed under a different surname.

On the 1881 census, Ann is married to John Eastwood are they are living in Dartford, Kent with three children. I searched for the birth records of these three children and found:

- Harriet    born 1862, Dartford, Kent - mother REYNOLDS
- John       born 1864, Dartford, Kent - mother REYNOLDS
- Caroline  born 1866, West Ham, Essex - mother REYNOLDS (listed incorrectly on census)

Interestingly, though she gave her surname as Jones when she married, she gave her surname as Reynolds when registering her children.

Armed with this, I looked for your ancestor’s birth record using the name Ann Reynolds and found:

Ann Reynolds born 1839, Dartford, Kent - mother JONES

I have seen this with my own travelling ancestors where they seem to use both their mother’s or their father’s surname interchangeably so I felt I was on the right track.

I decided to see if there were any other Reynolds children with mother Jones born around the same time and place. I found three:

- John Reynolds born 1840 Malling, Kent
- Phoebe Reynolds born 1841 Sevenoaks, Kent
- Sarah Reynolds born 1850 Sevenoaks, Kent

Of significant interest, I also found a baptismal record for Phoebe:

Phoebe Reynolds
Baptised 3 Jan 1841
St Martin’s Church, Brasted, Kent
Parents: George Reynolds (Tramp?) & Charlotte

The father’s name George and the occupation listed as (query) tramp lead me to believe that is the correct family.

So, to sum up - I believe your ancestor Ann Jones was born:

Ann Reynolds in 1839 in Dartford, Kent the daughter of George Reynolds and Charlotte Jones and that she had at least three siblings.

Sorry if I have just given you a load of information that you no longer need but I have been stuck indoors with covid and found this a relaxing way to pass the time 😂
