Hi Harris of Oz, I am researching my Harris ancestry.my research has led me to believe that my ggggrandfather was Mark Light Harris. My ggrandfather was Edwin Harris son of Samuel Harris who I think was the son of Mark.Samuel emigrated to NZ in 1857 with his wife Amelia , daughter Jessie and son Edwin. He was 28 at this time  making his birth date 1829.does this tally with your research or am I totally on the wrong track?

hurrah !I got the death cert. and it is him. Finally I have found when he died but of course it throws up more questions. The death cert details say he was born in Wales and arrived in NZ aged 12 in 1840.Birth certs of his children say he was born Birkenhead Cheshire.

yes , that was my thinking when I read he was a wharf labourer.although Catherine , his wife is listed in the electoral role and Wises directory there is never any mention of William , not even on the electoral roles.Maybe becuase he was always at seaThere are other William Arnolds in Nelson but these are a different family again.my William was born in Cheshire England and married in Nelson in 1860 , they had about 6 children so he must have been there some of the time.I have ordered the death cert, for the one who died in Wellington 1902 and hope it may shed some light on whether or not it is the right one.

I know he had died by 1903 when his wife Catherine died in Nelson. He was a mariner and was born in England about 1827.I can't find any record of his death in Nelson or anywhere in NZ and can only presume he died while at sea.

Kerry / Re: Laird of Tralee

Yes , I've been thinking the same thing. The story goes that my great grandmother was brought up by this "Laird of Tralee ", with his 4 sons after the tragic deaths of her mother and father within days of her birth and days of each other. Her only female friend in the household was a housemaid, with whom she ran away to NZ .When her uncle discovered this fact he paid her fare and cleared her from being an assisted passenger. If any of this is true they must have had a bit of wealth. It is such a great story I would love to know how much is fact and how much is fiction..
