"his future spouse" in 1718????

These indices are rubbish - and Lanark is one of the better ones.

This tells us that Elizabeth was the youngest child of George who was still alive in 1718.

But no relationship between Elizabeth and James Hay, Writer seems to be specified.

Can you send me an image, I'll try and  decipher a bit more.

You may never get the perfect proof.  Wait till you see the reasoning for 800 year old continental stuff!

Anyway you know what I think on this one.  The 1718 sasine minute does not mention James HAY - or George.

Some additional details.

Nisbet's Heraldry, Appx states that Andrew [m Mary HUCHESON] had a 2nd son George in Annathill, who had a son James, writer in Edinburgh.

Witnesses to the wedding of Joseph HOWIE & Elizabeth HAY in 1717 were John HAY IN Inchnoch & James HAY in Annathill.  George the Bishop's father [from DNB] "James Hay, a ‘writer in Dalrymple's Office,’ who as a nonjuror and a Jacobite was put in irons and banished in 1715"  Perhaps he was out by 1717 and was the witness at his sister's wedding.

I have found AN Archibald SOMERVILLE in the 1861 as 'father-in-law' of his son William SOMERVILLE [m Ann WALKER].  I presume Ann gave the relationship to the enumerator.

He was not the Archibald who died in Anderston in 1866 at 72y.

Agnes HENDRY, dau William & Jane WALKER is a sister of my ancestor James HENDRY m Katherine McFARLANE.

We know she married Archibald SOMMERVILLE, see this from 1999 - where the poster has both parties died before 1855.

The Archibald who died a widow in 1859 - how is it known he was the widow of Agnes HENDRY?

Regarding the mystery of his mother's maiden name.  Perhaps SHE re-married a FREW, hence Daniel FREW SOMMERVILLE b 1827

I am unable to get anything from Johannesburg but what others have made available.

This is copied from Gavin Waddell's GeneaNet database.  This is from a sasine of 1761:-

Robert HOWIE - too many of them in/of various places - I'm not convinced!

EG who was the Robert, of Meikle Drumgray who wit. mar con John Storie & Anne Clelland in 1735.  Apparently not the writer in Hamilton - and I think he might be in the wrong generation as well.

ScotlandsPeople does not give access to sasine, sheriff court and a whole load of other records.  At the rate they are moving I'll be senile before they are available.

Recte, William HENDRY & Rebecca HOWIE had a Jean as their 4th dau.

Perhaps the testament of the one year old Elizabeth SALMOND was dative.

Thanks for your reply.  I sent a message to Gavin.

I am not sure there is not another interpretation of the 1710 document!

My connection to this lot is HIGHLY speculative at the moment.  I am interested in William HENDRY m 1755 Rebecca HOWIE.  Their first son and 2nd dau match his parents.  John & Jean THOMSON - though there is a fellow who keeps overwriting the correct info on FamilySearch!

Their 2nd son and 1st dau are Joseph & Elizabeth.  Indicative that Rebecca COULD be dau Joseph HOWIE & Elizabeth HAY - who may possibly descend from Robert The Bruce.
