Europe / Re: Surname BUTFOY origin pease.
« on: Thursday 30 May 19 06:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi, I am trying to trace the origin of the Surname Butfoy. I have been told it may be French?  My g g grandmother was Rebecca Butfoy who married Charles Nix in 1836 at St Leonards, Shoreditch.  She was born 1818 in Bethnal Green,  her father was James and mother Ann. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you, Sara.

Hi Sara,

My 3rd great grandmother was Rebecca Butfoy and if you search my family tree on Ancestry, I have traced the line back to the 1600's. It is French and we are decedents of the Hugenots going all the way back to Charles Bouttefouy and Catherine Deshay early 1600's.

It does appear they came to England via Rochester and settled in Canterbury before moving to London.

I myself are English, having been born the East End and my Father was from Battersea.

My Family tree is under Rebecca Taylor and you are most welcome to search this.

Thanks Jamjar,

That's entirely my thinking as well, I have been back today and checked the lineage.

I just signed up for family search and will use that as well as the other resources.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks Jamjar,

You are a star and lots of information to work through.

I obviously need to join a few search sites as well as you are getting more information than I can find.

In the 1901 Census a Charles Nunn is listed as living with Martha and Charles (aged 20 as son) along with Walter & May.

I am wondering if he was born out of wedlock or an illegitimate Son?

The only other reference I have found was for a Charles Nunn born to a lady called Ella in a workhouse around the same time in London.

I will keep trying to solve the puzzle!

Hi everyone,

If you don't mind another information request related to my research on my Fathers side.

My Great, great Grandfather was Charles Edwin Nunn (b 1857 in Huntingdonshire) I am having trouble finding a birth certificate for him and any details of parents.

I know he married Martha Patricia "Patty' Stanyon in 1884 and had 3 Children, although it appears my Great Grandfather (Charles) was born in 1881.

Any help on Charles Edwin gratefully accepted!

Many thanks

Becky

Ah, right so this will be the marriage then:-

Marriages Mar 1946
Martin    Frederick R    Smith    W.Ham    4a   133
Smith    Violet M A    Martin    W.Ham    4a   133

You probably have this already but I thought I would put it in.

Yes thank you.

My Mother had 2 sisters and a 1/2 sister, 2 of her sisters were the daughters of Harold and one the daughter of Frederick.

Frederick married my Grandmother Violet and took on three daughters, a brave man indeed back in the 1940's!

This is great information, thanks to everyone for their help, gives me some leads to go on.

My Father is 87 and Mum died in 2002, so I only remember what I was told as a child.

My family come from West & East London and I have done well on tracing all but my maternal Grandfathers tree.

As people have said, Smith is not an easy name to trace.

Thank you so much

Becky

https://www.findmypast.co.uk/1939register
 - you should also find them here (looking at the free index, I believe they are in West Ham - Violet is listed under both Smith and Martin as the 1939 register includes references to later marriages for women), this will give you his birthdate.

It's very easy to go wrong looking for Smiths so you want to gather all the info you can to make sure you don't go after the wrong one!

Yes, my Grandfather was killed during the war & Violet remarried a Fredrick R Martin, who I knew as Granddad

Hi everyone,

Looking for help with my Grandfather, Harold H Smith, (1906-1944), he married my Grandmother, Violet M A. Nix in 1931, in West Ham London.

I have traced my Grandmothers family back, but cannot find any information on my maternal Grandfather, other than marriage and death, so would be grateful of any help.

Thanks

Becky
