Occupation Interests / Re: LINK: National Gas Archives

Northrow,
Nice to hear you have had some success.
I know that  E. E. P. Kelsey, The Close, Salisbury, was Solicitor to the Company. You might like to see if the  firm is still in existance. Also you may wish to try the link http://www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues/22788/pages/5398. This site may give you further information, if not of Thomas, then Salisbury Gas Light & Coke/ Fisherton.
Regards.

Secretaries of gas companies were frequently independant solicitors (and directors) and not always directly employed by the company. If you can find the solicitors he worked for, their successors may have information.  The solicitors may have deposited material in the local county archives. Alternatively, as Salisbury was a large concern he may have been a member of the British Association of Gas Managers, later the Institution of Gas Engineers, (now with Managers added!).  There may be a slight possibility they may be able to help, website - http://www.igem.org.uk/company/contact.asp. There is also a link to the British Gas Museum on that site as an alternative. Finally try the National Gas Archives. Unfortunately, the archivist plus one other, are the only active employees. They depend on volunteers to a large extent, so expect some delay, unfortunate, but a result of the times.

Just noticed this forum today.  Has anyone tried obtaining information from National Grid archives?
Unfortunately, apart from the Archivist and one other employee, they are dependant upon volunteers to a great extent. Inevitably, enquiries can take some considerable time. Persistance is the key. Once contact is established I have found them exelent in providing information.

Try Durham Record Office.  The Hanby Holmes (solicitor) papers are archived there.  My better half worked for him and she seems to remember several Ewbank documents.

World War One / Re: What are these regiments?
« on: Wednesday 11 July 07 20:07 BST (UK)  »
Many thanks for the replies.
I would agree that the badges are RE and Leeds Pals.
The gentleman shown is in fact William Henry Huitson as advised.
The youngster is believed to be his son wearing his father's cap.  No doubt research may show that William may have enlisted in the Leeds Pals and transfered to the RE.
The enquiry was posted on behalf of a third party with a common ancestor, hence my lack of basic information at the time of posting.  My apologies for the lack in my initial research.  :P
Regards.

World War One / What are these regiments?
« on: Tuesday 10 July 07 21:00 BST (UK)  »
Could someone identify the two regiments from the cap badges in the two photographs.  Although Australian residents three brothers enlisted in UK forces.  One in the DLI, a second Northumberland Fusiliers, and the third unknown hence the query.
Also what regimental cap is the youngster wearing?

Yorkshire (North Riding) / Re: Parish where Buish Croft is located in Yorkshire?

I believe the correct location is Bowes Cross, about one mile east of Bowes.
There is a baptism for Elizabeth dau Thomas & Sarah Bainbridge, Nab House, 15th January 1833, Johnson Lambert, minister.  Nab House is 1.3 miles NW of Bowes Cross, and 1.4 miles NNE of Bowes village.

I have a transcript of Bowes Registers.

It could be Wackerfield, a small hamlet, 2 miles north east of Staindrop.

I believe the name "Hark unto Blue Cap," that Jean referred to in 1861 refers to a hunting hound.  In the 1834 Pigot Commercial Directory the premise is listed as "Hound, or Blue Cap, Jane Greathead, Coniscliffe."
There is a Blue Cap Inn, at Sandiway.  Bluecap was a foxhound owned by Mr John Smith-Barry of  the Cheshire Hounds, and in 1762 took part in a famous race, at Newmarket, for a 500-guinea wager with Hugo Meynell, the Master of the Quorn Hunt.
Locally, blue cap also refers to the bluetit, the blue flame from a miners lamp with the presence of fire damp, or the mining Blue Cap Fairies who expected a fair days work for a fair days pay.  There was also a Blue Cap champion Wensleydale ewe, but I believe this was around 1850, after the above 1834 date.
I believe the "Hound" in the listing is the definitive explanation, a personal opinion only!
