Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Joseph SHEPHERD & family, Aller 1870s
« on: Saturday 01 December 07 22:34 GMT (UK)  »
I know from family members that he was a policeman and that he settled in South Wales, and I have found a Joseph Shepherd in 1891 in Aberdare whose occupation is Police Constable so I am confident that is the right person.  Frustratingly he gives slightly different ages in 1891 (23) and 1901 (29).  By 1901 he is married to Miriam with a son William and living in Pontypridd - again this ties in with info I have from relatives.  Maybe he claimed to be older than he was to get into the police force?  He remarried in 1917 though and is then listed as being 48!

Furthermore other siblings of Josiah Shepherd appear in Ystradyfodwg in South Wales in 1881 which might provide a reason for him to have gone to South Wales in the first place.

There is a lot of circumstantial evidence so maybe he did change his name...

Thanks for your help, this seems to be the only family in the area who come close to the description.  I will keep hunting though as I have yet to find Joseph in 1881...

Somerset Lookup Requests / Joseph SHEPHERD & family, Aller 1870s
« on: Thursday 29 November 07 21:34 GMT (UK)  »
I am trying to trace Joseph Shepherd who was born between 1868 and 1872 (depending on different ages given in different censuses / marriage certificate etc).  He was born in Aller or Langport and had a father called William who was a farmer.  William died before 1917.

I have searched numerous online BMD records but can find no Joseph Shepherd in this area.  Closest I can find is a Josiah Shepherd born in Langport in Q3 of 1871.  Can anyone help me to find Joseph?

Thanks,
Mel

Staffordshire / Re: Where is Blithfield?

Hi Gordon

Not sure whether you got my reply (via PM) so just in case here is the list of my direct ancestors.  We seem to descend from John and Elizabeth Burgess (John died 1743 in Blithfield), although there are a few other Burgesses on the tree who are not linked in so I'm not sure how they fit.

John Burgess (d. 1743) & Elizabeth
Edward Burgess (c. 1730) & Ann Ball
Lewis Burgess (c. 1769) & Ann / Mary or Mary-Ann?
James Burgess (c. 1805) & Sarah Elizabeth Foster
Edwin Henry Burgess (b. 1841 in Lambeth) & Eliza Osborn
Charles Walter Burgess (b. 1874 in Leyton, Essex) & Ellen Radford
Norman Burgess (b. 1909 in Romford, Essex) & Charlotte Kearn

The tree seems to be very large in the early 1800s with many siblings, some of whom I have traced through to the late 1800s but no further as yet.  There seem to be a lot of farmers in the family, with up to 320 acres of land in some census records.

I hope our information correlates - it would be interesting to know who the earliest Burgesses were in Blithfield.

Regards,
Melanie

Donna

Thanks for the info.  How frustrating that the gaps in the records coincide with the years I'm particularly interested in!! Nevermind, might try the Bishops records as they seem more complete.

Thanks

Staffordshire / Where is Blithfield?
« on: Saturday 08 April 06 23:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi

I'm researching my Burgess ancestors and have traced them back to Blithfield in Staffordshire in the early 1800s. What I can't be sure of is where Blithfield is, the only reference I can see is to the reservoir. Was there a village there before the reservoir was constructed (in the 1950s I believe), and if so where would any parish records have gone?

Any advice or local insight would be very useful!

Thanks,
Mel

Hi Anne

:D Thank you for the info - it certainly looks like the right people. I had come across Hurren before but could not prove they were related.  This will give me some more investigating to do!

Thanks again,
Mel

Completed Census Requests / Re: 1901 credits

Hi Caz

Thanks for the offer. If you have time could you look up Clifford George Allen for me? He was born 1874 in Bridgwater, Somerset. Was possibly married to a Susanna Briffet by then and I believe living in Bridgwater still. I do not know of any children.

I'd also be interested in the whereabouts of his father Henry Allen at that time. He was born 1852 in Bridgwater and was either a widower or had married Alma Pitman by this time (they married in March 1901 I think so depends exactly when the census was done).

Many thanks in advance,
Mel
