James Papple retired sailor and clothier aged 64 is in the 1881 census in 75 Hamilton Street, Saltcoats as a widower living with his daughter Margaret Papple. He was born in Twyholm, Kirkudbrightshire

Have you got Margaret Murrays actual death certificate as that may confirm its the right one as should have who she married to, if he is deceased.  If she was in Saltcoats then maybe she was living with one of her children or on holiday.

Have you looked just for a birth of a Margaret or Maggie Bruce as it could be the same situation that her parents never married or were even together especially if her mother took on the name Forbes. Is the only evidence you have for her being born in Glasgow and the dates from the census records?

All i really do is have main name groups set up with different colours in the matches and then try to do this from the shared matches.  So after a while you will have quite a complete list for each surname however there are always outliers that match with you but you cant seem to link to their matches.

It could be any time from early 1900s to early 1920s.  The style of clothes and hairstyle were common for most working class people at that time and didnt change much.

You may need to go a bit further back to make the connections could like through maybe sharing great great great grandparents.  I am only saying this as thats similar figures to some of my matches that I have been in touch with.

I think the poster said that 2 of the family members left families in the UK and started up new families in Canada and Australia. So i am assuming this means leaving their spouse and children.

So that was what my post referred to especially as she said they changed their names.

Are they on the Ellis Island website as that might give you some more information.

The DNA is useful to find out who you are related to but the other side is finding out peoples stories using records.

I would say in this case that you might need to closely look at the paper records again as it is quite unusual to have people leaving their families and moving abroad.

Do you have DNA matches for the people who are from the new families?
