World War Two / 53 Heavy Regiment, Royal Artillery
« on: Sunday 27 April 25 21:44 BST (UK)  »
Having fought a lengthy battle with the National Archives and MoD Service Access Team I have finally received my father's service records! Having confirmed that he was in 25 Battery, 53 Heavy Regiment I would now like to find out his movements from late June 1944 to the end of the war.

I find the structure of the RA quite confusing, but does anyone know if the War Diary of the regiment is available on Ancestry? I'd quite like to know if it's available before taking out a subscription!

I recall my mother telling me that he was involved in the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, and I believe that he certainly saw the camp at close quarters. It would be interesting to discover the extent of his involvement.

Earlier this month I stumbled across a documentary on the liberation which contained "interviews" with inmates, guards and British soldiers. I don't think that it was the Sam Menzies documentary. Although the interviews appear in "What They Found" I'm sure that in the programme that I watched the interviewees gave their names, and the camp guards had to confirm the date at the beginning of the interview.

Any ideas, anyone?

Apologies for the long post and many questions!

Pete

World War Two / WWII Service Records
« on: Thursday 13 March 25 20:13 GMT (UK)  »
Is anyone else having difficulty in obtaining WWII service records from the National Archives? I applied for my father’s records, supplying his service number and copy of his death certificate, some time ago, but apart from receiving emails saying that they are dealing with a backlog and not to contact them, I am still waiting. As my initial request was in November 2023 I decided to ask for an internal review. I now have an email which states that they have a backlog and they will contact me in due course!
I know that they have actually located the records as they have quoted the document reference in their emails.
I am at a loss as to what to do next. I’m 76-years-old and at this rate of progress I’ll be lucky to see anything from them before my own demise!

Many thanks for your reply, Shaun. Sorry it’s not my ancestor (although he was apparently musical), but best to know!

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Is This the Lydd Coastguard?

In researching my great-great-grandfather, John Henry, I came across this photo taken outside the Royal Oak in Lydd, Kent (Copyright Lydd Museum, Postcard owned by Roy Moore).

John Henry was a coastguard in Lydd in the 1870s, and my interest was piqued by the fact that the man on the far right appears to be a man of colour. John was born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1830.

The uniforms look a bit flamboyant, but could they be dress uniforms of some description? Help in dating the photo would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for help. I have found him on ancestry, but it's the Workhouse records I can't find. I guess I must have discovered his workhouse admission at Nottinghamshire Archives which I've visited many times, but I can't for the life of me imagine what I've done with my notes!
Another visit called for!
Thanks again.

Family History Beginners Board / Help! Can't Find Source!
« on: Tuesday 24 May 22 11:18 BST (UK)  »
I have committed the ultimate sin. I have diligently done my research on George Taylor Whyman, 1882 - 1917, and discovered that he was admitted to the Nottingham (Bagthorpe) Workhouse on 1st December 1909 and discharged 6th December 1909. His daughter, Cissie, is admitted in March or early April 1910, perhaps for medical treatment as she died shortly after.
I am now writing up my research notes and find I haven't recorded my sources for this information!
I've looked on Ancestry and Family Search, and had a quick look on Find My Past, but with no luck. Can anyone with the Genealogist or any other database advise if any of them contain records for this institution. Over the years I've had memberships with most of them and can't remember where I got the information from.
Many thanks, Pete.
