Hi Crisane
I have Mary in the 1851 census with her sister in Fraserburgh. They
Mary states she is married but still goes by the name Lyon. They both live & work with a grocer spirit retailer

Now the strange bit... William Murison was visiting as was his son Alexander aged 1!!

Dare I hope that things are becoming clearer!!

Hi Crisane
I Will have a look at Mary marrying Wm Murrison. It may be that the grandparents looked after Eliza.

Yes that is my David Constant in the 1851 census. He died in 1855

Thank you for the help

Hi Ladyhawke
Yes it was Mary Lyon who registered her daughter's birth.
At that time she was residing at 4 1/2 Princes Street, Gravesend. Eliza was also born at this address.
Mary was in domestic service

That could be my Mary in the census but it would make her younger than thought. Nothing with this particular woman would surprise me!

Hi Girl Guide
I have never found Mary & Eliza together except on her birth certificate in 1847, Gravesend.
Mary is then mentioned on Eliza's marriage & death certificates

Mary is an enigma!!No birth or death cert
I will do as you suggest and search the surname interest
You have been a great help that I you

I have revisited National Records of Scotland

Alexander Lyon & Helen Wilson had a daughter Helen on 16 Jan 1822. The witnesses at the baptism were Helen Grant & Mary Reid
Could it be that the child was Christened Mary but called Helen to avoid confusion between mother and child? And after the 2 witnesses I.e Mary Helen?

It may be that Helen married but I can't find that or a death cert in either Christian name

I'm clutching at straws

This one really is a mystery!!
1841 census I have Isabel aged 10 so it could well be that 10 years later she was with Mary in Fraserburgh and both working in a shop.
There is no sign anywhere of a birth cert for Mary
It could well be there was no marriage & that Eliza Jane was given the surname Constant for decency!!
You have been a great help. Thank you

Hi
A flurry of replies 😄
Alexander Forbes married Eliza Jane Constant in 1866 and I am confident from then with info from my grandma.

The problem is Eliza's parents
Eliza was born in 1847 in Gravesend to Mary Lyon. I have the birth certificate. When Eliza married/ died her mother was Mary Constant & her father David Constant. I can find nothing on Mary whatsoever. There is no record in Scotland. David died in 1855 ages 33 IF I have the right man.

Crispness & Ladyhawke have located my people 👌

The Monmouth Eliza isn't mine

There is just no record of David and Mary marrying or indeed Mary being born!!
