I'm sorry but I'm coming to this thread late in the day. Jemima Ethel Burton was born on 11 August 1910 and baptised at Caerphilly on 19 February 1914, daughter of Richard & Amelia Burton, the Meadows, Caerphilly, Gipsy. She was buried at Mitchel Troy, Monmouthshire on 6 September 1982. Her father, Richard, was baptised at Preston Gubbals, Shropshire on 4 January 1875, son of Henry and Selina Burton, Merrington field, Tinman. Henry is actually Charles Burton and Selina was formerly Selina Organ. Charles Burton and was the son of Jeremiah Burton & Harriet Lovell. This line is part of a long-established Romany family that I have traced back to the early to mid 18th century. I published a book on the family at the end of last year. Please get in touch if you want more details.

Travelling People / Re: ATTEWELL

Hi. I've just stumbled on this thread as I'm looking for a particular Attewell. However, I notice some dialogue about Amelia Manley b c. 1847. I think she is definitely mistranslated in the 1861 census as Maria (it's not so different phonetically to 'melia). Although the census says she was born in Dorset the family were travelling throughout the South West. I believe Amelia was baptised in Misterton, Somerset on 17 January 1747 d/o Henry & Matilda Manley.

The person I'm currently researching is Harriet Attewell bp 26 May 1877 at Dingestow, Monmouth. She was the daughter of Stephen and Mahalah Ayres. Mahala was baptised as a Burton in Somerset but  travelled in Wales under the name Ayres (her grandmother's maiden name). Mahala (also known as Ela) had several relationships but always baptised her children under the name of Ayres. So, Harriet's father may not be an Ayres. I'm trying to find out with which Attewell Harriet formed a relationship. Apart from her baptism, the only other record I've found for Harriet is on the 1901 census where she is listed as Harriet Attewell aged 22 and living with her grandmother who is listed as Harriet Burton.

Many thanks for getting back to me.  I do have a lot of information about him including a copy of his 21-year service record.  Unfortunately, apart from the postings to Canada and India, his UK postings just says 'Home Service'.  I'm able to find him in every census from 1851 to 1901 except 1871.  I have tried different variants for the spelling of the surname.  The only thing that's remotely close is Charles Pearson.  He's the right age and comes from the right area but is in Barracks at Woolwich with the Army Service Corps which doesn't sound right.  Our Charles Perkins was born c. 1849 he enlisted in the 4th Batallion, 60th Rifles on 26 March 1867.  His regimental number was 1828. During his 21 years we know he served in Canada, India, Winchester, Portland, Devonport, Fermoy and Mold.

If anyone knows of any other UK postings for the regiment in 1871 I'd love to know where he might have been.

Thanks to both of you.
This confirms that John Henry  Evans was the Henry Evans, 19, Private, b. Middlesex London, listed at the Cheriton Camp in 1871.
Was 18 or 16 the official age for enlisting, and how would I find out when he left, given that he was 'other ranks' and the records of that period don't seem to exist.

I'm also looking for someone in the 4th Batallion 60th Rifles in 1871.  His name is Private Charles Perkins.  I know that he served with the Regiment in Canada between 1/7/1867 and 18/10/1869.  He then came back to the UK.  The next time I can locate him is on his marriage certificate.  He was married in 1874 in Portland and is shown as living at the Verne Citadel.  However, I cannot find him in the 1871 census for Winchester Barracks, The Verne or the camp at Cheriton.  Any more ideas please?
