World War Two / Re: TA info about 4th Bn. King’s Own Royal Regiment (Lancaster)

Checked through the WW2 Medal and Royal Artillery tracer cards for a Joseph Devlin but no joy. Good luck with your search.

The only Army units on Op Chariot were No 2 Commando with demolition parties drawn from a few other army Commando units. David Finnie is confirmed in Max Hastings book on Op Biting as a Cpl at the time and was 1st to drop from his Whitley bomber, as you suspected no one of the name Bryson on that operation. It looks likely they struck up a friendship during Parachute training before joining their respective units.

It looks like he was also part of the 17th Mounted Infantry Company on detachment from his regiment. The 17th didn't add him to their medal roll and him and the other 2 men have been added at a later date to their parent regimental roll, he would of been issued with the QSA and clasps from the Loyal North Lancs.

Armed Forces / Re: Battle of Jutland - struggling to find a record
« on: Saturday 07 December 24 12:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi everyone

I am trying to find military records for my Great Grandfather Herbert Hargreaves (also know Herbert Howard when he was a young boy).

DOB 27th April 1885, born Bury, Lancashire.

My dad was told by his Dad that Herbert served in the Navy and was at the Battle Of Jutland in 1916. Apparently he lost his eye in battle.

I cannot find anything at all that relates to this - now we are wondering if it was a made up fantasy!

Can anyone help point me in the direction of where I should be looking for records? I have tried Fold3, Ancestry, Familysearch and MyHeritage.

Here’s to hoping someone can help!

Thank you

Vicki

There are only 2 Hargreaves on the Jutland crew list, a Samuel and a James.

Thank you, Tony.

Still perplexed, as he said he was in Russia but clearly not. I wonder if other areas extends to Turkey with the Greco-Turkish War and the Anglo Turkish War, which looks like he was a part of onboard HMS Marlborough and HMS Argus.
The Marlborough did patrol in the Black Sea during his time on her so i can see that he might of gone to ports in The Crimea so technically he did go to Russia before July 1920, this would of made him eligible for the Victory medal to go with his War Medal for being in the Navy before 11/11/1918.

He was initially in a light anti aircraft unit. Due to a massive shortfall of Infantry soldiers after the Normandy campaign a lot of soldiers from the support Corps and RAF were transferred en mass to the Infantry, your man was one of them.

Going by his age and possible enlistment year, good chance he was still serving as a regular in the Navy and posted in one of the fleets overseas.

Reference her route, until the log book is released to confirm it would probably of been close to, UK-Gibraltar- Malta-Port Said(Suez Canal)-Aden-Colombo-Singapore-Hong Kong. She was already in the area on the outbreak of the war and ferried casualties to Japan. In between these stops would of been a couple of different run ashore stops for the crew to unwind, would explain places like Rome(Civitavecchia).

If you look at the left sleeve on the centre and right man it looks like American style stripes for sergeant rank plus they always tucked their ties in like that . ;)
