Thank you Lal.

The houses were also known as 'the bog', I am just curious as to what they looked like, I will have a look at the library in Ormskirk perhaps they may have photos.

I notice we do share some interests!!

Thank you Andrew.

The houses were off Gorst Lane adjacent to the canal and now have been demolished.

My granddad and great grandparents lived there.

Lancashire / Re: LIVERPOOL COWKEEPERS

I too have a relative who was a cowkeeper in Liverpool. In the 1881 census he was a joiner living in Parbold, however by 1891 he was living in Hare Street, Hare Place Court and was listed as a cowkeeper milk. I had heard family stories of him being a dairyman. I love all the above replies as it builds a picture of life then, however  in todays age I dont think I would like my neighbours to keep cows in their back garden  :o

Census and Resource Discussion / Re: 1911 census..... what's it done for you ?

Hi,
I found my granddad had another brother and sister, so my dad had an uncle and aunt he didn't know about, I did a bit more research and found they had both died, which was sad. I wanted to know more so sent off for their death certificates and discovered my g uncle died in 1928 aged 24 of heart failure and my g aunt died in 1939 aged 21 of TB. My next step is to go along to our local church yard and hopefully find their resting place. Finding these 2 relatives was a suprise as my dad says his father never mentioned them, I hope now they won't be forgotten.

Family History Beginners Board / G Grandparents not living in sin
« on: Monday 02 February 09 21:12 GMT (UK)  »
After many years of trying and failing to find a marriage for my g grandparents I have finally found it. I really believed that they had never married as they had moved down to Lancashire from Carlisle / Dumfries area so it would have been easy to fool people. However today I received a copy of their marriage certificate and they had married, I feel I need to apologise to them, I  now have to find their birth records, that might take me another couple of years :)
The main reason for this post was to spur on anyone who is struggling, I have been frustrated and disappointed for many years, but I finally found what I needed, so keep going and maybe you will get the eureka feeling I have had today ;D ;D ;D
Good luck

Family History Beginners Board / Re: Marriage certificate

Many thanks for your replies, we had wondered if it was a legal requirement to give the details and not leave the boxes blank. My grandmother obviously didn't want her fathers details on the certificate.

Family History Beginners Board / Marriage certificate
« on: Sunday 25 January 09 19:46 GMT (UK)  »
Just a general query (apologies if I have posted in the wrong place) at a family gathering this afternoon I was shown a copy of my grandparents marriage certificate , I had seen it before many years ago as my grandmother had 'altered her age on it in biro ' as she was 2 years older than my grandfather :) a great family joke. However on a more serious note we noticed that my grandmothers father's details had not been completed his name and occupation were blank and he was still alive at the time of the marriage. We do know that my grandfather changed religion to marry my grandmother, however as a family we wondered if it was possible not to enter your fathers details on a certificate, or was it the fact that my g grandfather disapproved and his details were not entere
