The Common Room / Re: Charles Holt b 1811

Thank you for info on Samuel.
Spent most of the day searching for anything on Ellen, Elizabeth and Mary Jane.
Ellen was baptised twice,
1. Top Chapel : Countess of Huntington's Connexion, Tyldesley on 11 Dec 1836.
2.  St George, Tyldesley on 12 Feb 1837

There’s an Elizabeth marries John Ratcliffe, 6 Oct 1866, father Charles, joiner. Can find no children or family trees on Ancestry.

Found nothing about Mary Jane.

Think I’ll call it a day on the girls, the Foden connection and finding Samuel Foden Holt, (gtx3 Grandad). Pleased with what has been found, onward and upward with the next elusive ancestor.
Thanks for your help.

Morning, thanks for all the information.

I've found a marriage for an Elizabeth Holt to John Ratcliffe 6 Oct 1866 which looks promising. It was at St John Church, Manchester.

Ann married George Duncan 18 Dec 1859, I have details of this family.

There’s a Charles, son of Samuel and Ann b 21 Feb 1808. (Lancs OPC) I  know his marriage to Elizabeth would suggest 1811 but as he was so much older maybe he knocked a few years off.

Seems very likely Foden is an earlier surname. Hadn’t thought of emigration.

Samuel Foden Holt, my gt grandad,  son of Charles and Ellen, went to Ireland, married Eliza Galbraith 1853, then Susan Thompson, gt grandma, 1874, he died 12 Jun 1899.

So there’s just Ellen, Alice and Mary Jane to find now.

How these families do grow, found a brother and sister for Susan Thompson last week which gave her 22 nieces and nephews.

Thank you so much for your time and help. Much appreciated.

Charles married Alice Holland in 1832, they had several children, Samuel Foden Holt b 1834 was my
Gt Grandad. On the 1841 and 1851 censuses there are 4 girls but I can find no trace of them after this. Apart from Ann who married George Duncan in 1859.

Alice died and Charles married Elizabeth Cunnah nee Jones on 6 Oct 1855 in Liverpool, but I can’t find them on the 1861 or following censuses. Nor anywhere else. Guess I could be looking in the wrong places, help/suggestions welcome.

Hi Antigo and wattnb,

How exciting two new 'cousins' in one week.
My user name on Ancestry is McSand65.
Husband's out today walking on a windy mountain somewhere in Spain so I'm going to read and note all the info you have on here.
Many thanks for sharing.

Thank you Maiden Stone will check out Surname Interests.
According to his obituary he was ’a remarkable man'.  He was a shoemaker from Mauchline in Ayrshire who was very socially involved and ahead of his time. He was an authority on Robbie Burns.
There are many mentions of him in newspapers of the time, and his obituary is in many, many newspapers across the U.K. There is a large marble monument to him in Mauchline Cemetery, erected a few years after his death.  I haven't seen it yet but I hope to before too long. 🤞
The newspaper section of FindMyPast is where I found the information I have.

Thank you for replying. Yes, I do have ancestry subscription and will check out the family trees
there. Just trying all avenues of enquiry, you never know what you might find out. Already had a reply to a post this afternoon regarding another branch of my family so I'm well chuffed. Wish I'd thought to use roots chat sooner.

Yes, that's right. Janet and John Porter.
Yes, I do have an Ancestry subscription. I haven't checked out Lundie/Porters/Henderson's etc., yet.
If you're willing to share your information I'd be very grateful.
Thank you for replying so promptly, I've not used roots chat before but it certainly seems to get results.

My Gt Gt Grandad - he seems to have been 'a remarkable man' according to his obituary in various
newspapers. I wonder if anyone on here is related.
He was born to James Gibb and Mary Donald and married Helen Morton on 21.7.1843. I have only
just started on this branch so information is sparse apart from newspaper articles found on FindMyPast.
Would really love to connect to a cousin or two. Many thanks.

Just started researching Lundie/Porter families.
Janet Lundie is my 3x great grandmother. The information about the Fenwick suicide/murder and all the information about the family coming over from Ireland is very useful. I just wonder if there
is any new information available. Thank you.
