Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry Clusters
« on: Wednesday 09 July 25 18:04 BST (UK)  »
Like others here, i have just got the cluster option, and have to say its very disappointing compared to the MyHeritage version. Despite most of my MH matches being transfers from Ancestry i only have 3 clusters compared to 21 from MH.
Now i do like the fact that the display is showing an overlap between 2 of the clusters (effectively making one a sib-cluster of the other). But otherwise the clusters are not showing me anything new, all the people are ones i have linked in my tree already, so not giving me any new hints to look at.
I know its only beta, so things might get better as they refine the logic, but i am not going to hold my breath.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: My Heritage £35 Unlock Features
« on: Wednesday 21 May 25 16:40 BST (UK)  »
Hi Helen,
Don't pay £35 for it, wait until they do one of the special offers, i think i got mine a couple of years ago for half that as a one off charge to unlock the tools.
Back to your original question, yes i can view matches that i share with a match, and it does show how much DNA that shared match shares with each of us (i.e I have a match called Fred, and we both share a match with Susan, i can see that i share 28cM with Susan and Fred shares 150cM.  The important bit is you also get access to the Chromosome browser and see exactly where you match, which can be a great help if you can start positively identifying segment's as belonging to a specific family line.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Thrulines question
« on: Monday 19 May 25 17:52 BST (UK)  »
I'm still trying to understand everything but I've added a screenshot the man in question, the lady next to him is his second wife, my 2x great grandmother.

Does this mean it's only a suggestion based on other trees? Because it's saying there are no dna matches?

Any help appreciated.
Hi Bethany,
That screen shot is from thrulines, which does not show you actual matches, it shows suggested ancestors based on a mixture of your tree and other ancestry trees.  If you have a match with another tester that also shares the same relative in there tree, it would in theory show them when you click on that person in the thrulines page.  However like Biggles says, it is not 100% proof of a relative its just a suggestion based on the trees ancestry has selected.
now in your case because its showing zero matches, there is no DNA connections (yet) its just a tree suggestion.

I didn't see the actual announcement :-)  just saw the description on the video said the 'couple of weeks'....

I have been having a lot of dry spell's for new matches recently, and then get a drop of a dozen or so.  I wonder if they are having some processing capacity issues, which is causing them to bunch up

Has anybody seen any sign's yet that ancestry is actually delivering this autoclusters feature ?  It was mentioned as being a couple of weeks, and its not been 2 months and i have not seen anything appear on my account (and i do have a pro-tools subscription, so its not hidden in that :-) )

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Y-DNA question
« on: Thursday 27 March 25 20:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Which version of the test you go for really depends on what you want to really get from the results. The Y111 is a good starter position, and like biggles says you can upgrade later, but you are unlikey to get many usable matches from it to confirm your line with named people.  the BigY test can give a lot more recent branches, from which if you are lucky you could contain matches which your could match to an actual MRCA.
Now looking at your living DNA halopgroup, ftDNA is showing that formed around 2600 BCE and they have results from around 60k testers spread over 11 sub-branches. I would suspect that a Y111 test would give you a more modern result than that, and put you at least into one of those 11, if not a sub-branch of one. I would suggest doing that, and then seeing how many matches you get and if any of then have gone to BigY that could bring you into a more recent time range if you upgraded. The Y-dna test though is still really a waiting game and down to luck on if you get good matches

Personally i did upgrade to Big-Y, but my group is estimated to have split off between 1360 & 1860, with the most likly time range aournd 15-1600, so i have not yet been able to get close to an matches for named people :-(

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA Match Question
« on: Sunday 02 March 25 07:07 GMT (UK)  »
Hi tablecloth,
As Biggles50 mentioned, there are a lot of possible relationships for a match of that size, so dont take what MyHeritage says as gospel. If you don't want to use the DNAPainter tool, on your MyHeritage matches you can click on the relationship description to view other possible relationships.
Now looking at DNAPainter, its suggesting these 4 relationships with the highest probablity : Half 2C 2C1R Half 1C2R 1C3R.  Which suggest connection from either Grandparents or Great Grandparents, however the other probably relationships are high enough that Great (x2) grandparents are also probably as well.  So therefore you really can't say with any certainty based on this one result alone which generation the match is, without either further DNA matches or a good paper trail to back it up.

One probably silly statement, you suggest you are sure its not your great grandmother as they don't match. But don't forget, you have 8 great grandparents, and from a purely DNA point of view it could be any of them unless you have other evidence to narrow it down to one specific line.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry Thrulines doesn't show all relatives
« on: Tuesday 25 February 25 18:47 GMT (UK)  »
Thrulines shows ancestors back several generations, and then shows whether there are any DNA matches through each ancestor, or none. I am helping a relative resolve some uncertain paternity back 3 generations and the one ancestor (my relative's great grandfather) who I really want to look at is totally missing from Thrulines while the other great grandparents are all there.
Hi Eric,
Just double checking, are you saying the person is not showing, or that the person is there with just no matches ?  Most of the people have responded on the second option, but i have a few cases where a person in my tree is not appearing on the thurlines screen at all. In most cases they are at the end of a branch, and also happen to be dummy names i used to see if anything could shake out from them.  I did mange to get one person to appear after unlinking and relinking them to the spouse, but doing the same actions didn't work on the other 2.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA matches - am I being illogical?
« on: Saturday 01 February 25 19:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
Have you looked at the DNA Painter web site ?  They have a tool where you can enter a family tree for a group of individuals and enter the DNA match sizes to a person that you are trying to find the relationship to.  This will give you a series of possible relationships, which will then give you an idea of the generation you are looking for as the MRCA.  This should give you a better idea on where to look for the overlap.
