Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 census ELLEN DOWNS of Stoke
« on: Sunday 25 July 10 19:20 BST (UK)  »
Hello Patrish,

Yes, I suppose it's perfectly possible that they were not legally married.   The 1841 reference I gave  (HO107, 992, 3/5 2) points to the Burton family living in Wharf Street, Shelton.  The original I looked at is exceedingly feint, hence, i think, the reason for a certain confusion over the surname.

What I could do about finding the marriage if there is one, I am not sure....

To MrsT_tobe,

I am simply quoting what Ellen gave as her place of birth in the 1851 and 1861 censuses (Stoke),  the 1871 census (Burslem) and 1891 census (Langport).   They may be wrong, but this is what she thought on each of these occasions.  Langport could well be Longport.  Thank you for that.

hello patrish,

Yes, I do see your point but I'm a bit stuck on finding her marriage to William Newton because it is likely to be before 1837 and I don't know WHERE I'm looking.  Do you have any ideas?

Thanks for the suggestion.  The place is certainly close to where I hope to find William Newton, but I'm not at all sure about a brickmaker.  The William NEWTON I am looking for was first a  BOATMAN, and later a railway worker. However, I will keep your suggestion in mind.  Thank you.

As  recently reported in the Northants Look Up requests, I think I have found the NEWTON family I was looking for in the 1841 census  .....  under the name BURTON!

Note the similarities between this and the family I am looking for:
Burton    William        30      1811   Boatman
Burton      Ellen           25    1816                         in county (Staffordshire)
Burton    Elizabeth      6      1835
Burton     Lucy       1 mnth   1841                         in county (Staffordshire)

HO107   992   3/5   2     living at Wharf Street, Shelton, Stoke upon Trent.

Janan thinks this might be it!

I have just added elsewhere, after all this time, and will do so here too, that I am wondering whether an entry in the 1841 census under BURTON should in fact read Newton.  The original is so faint you just cannot be sure.

Burton  William   30         Boats.......
Burton Ellen       25          .....................    Staffordshire
Burton Elizabeth   6
Burton Lucy     1 month                            Staffordshire

the address is Wharf Street, Stoke upon Trent, Shelton.

If this is the family I was looking for, it takes away the queries about was this the second marriage for Ellen etc, and makes things look far more straightforward.   The fact that William and Elizabeth were not born in Staffs fits in too, since I know they were both born in Northants.

After all this long time, I believe I have found them under the name BURTON,
William 30
Ellen     25     Staffordshire
Elizabeth  6
Lucy 1 mnth   Staffordshire
in Wharf Street, Stoke upon Trent, Shelton.
I cannot decipher William's occupation but I think it begins "Boats......

Surrey Lookup Requests / Re: marriage GEORGE ROGERSON b. 1859
« on: Monday 11 January 10 22:21 GMT (UK)  »
Thank you Valda for a lot of useful information, some of which I had also received from Louisa Maud via Personal Messages.  The new details I hadn't seen before concern Henry John Rogerson, and those are also most interesting, and are obviously connected since George and Mary Ann were witnesses.

Yes I did begin to realise after the first few messages that Richard George was likely to be the person I was looking for, because HIS children were the ones I was expecting George to have!!

I said I would obtain a copy of the birth certificate of one the George/'Mary Ann children.   I feel fairly sure now that the pieces of this particular puzzle will fit together as CaroleW, Louisa Maud and you have shown.  The GRO is only interested in online applicaitions now.  Do postal applications still work?  Do I go via the GRO or must it be via the local register office, in which case WHICH one?

Rootschat has been most helpful to me.  Thank you all.
