Shropshire / Re: James Porter born 1833 Shropshire

Wivenhoe, James and Ann's eldest daughter Helen (Ellen) cared for his children, then his second wife Elizabeth who bore him more children. they had 5 children only 2 survived, John and Linda Lillian. Robert died 1906 2 days after his father. Another son died in France WW1.William Henry age 21. Another daughter died 1909. My gr grandmother was brought up catholic.

My cousin and I spent several days in Wagga a few years ago, looking at newspaper records, and going through the Wagga Wagga  cemetery, found a few more details of how James had his own brick making business near the bank of the river and built his own house, some of the buildings he worked on etc. But no detailed records. Elizabeth died as Elizabeth Porter in a Sydney suburb.

Wivenhoe, The information on marriage is not much. He was a batchelor, brick maker from England age 29 yrs. She was Ann Caffrey spinster, house maid from Ireland aged 26 yrs They married in
Albury NSW, Australia.

It was not until I received his death cert that I knew his fathers name was Benjamin and that he was born in Shropshire. His eldest daughter, my gr grandmother supplied the information. Wagga Wagga records are not good, and I am told some went missing, as the river there often flooded maybe that is how they got lost. His wife Ann has no death records, and disappears after 1874 after the birth of their last child, daughter Mary Therese 1874. I believe she may have died in childbirth. Also even though details of James funeral and his son Robert, (both died and were buried in December 1906,) were detailed in the newspapers, there are no records of their burials in Wagga Wagga cemetery.  Nore any for Ann Porter. No record of marriage to his second wife Elizabeth either.

I have records for his life and those of his children and death of Elizabeth here in Australia, I am trying to go back to his roots in Shropshire.I do not have any more information on his family there.

Shropshire / James Porter born 1833 Shropshire

My gr gr grandfather James Porter came to Victoria,Australia   I believe 1854 on the ship Mooltan. In 1860 he married at age 29 to Ann Caffrey (Irish) in Albury, NSW. They had 6 children born in Wagga Wagga,NSW where James was a brick maker. He died in 1906 Wagga. His death cert has him born Shropshire, father Benjamin. His first born was Benjamin, his next Helen. I am searching for his family in Shropshire. All information after his arrival in Australia I already have. Im trying to go back to UK.
I found there were two Benjamin Porter born Shropshire. One in 1792 the other 1795. One had parents Edward and Ellen, the other James and Ann I think,
I followed up on one Benjamin and found he had son James etc who married in 1861 census. This cannot be our James Porter born 1833, because he married Ann Caffrey here in Albury, NSW. 20 May 1861. So I'm guessing ours is the other one. Please help find my James Porter.                       In criminal records etc, UK. 1828 Staffordshire,Benjamin Porter sentenced to 7 yrs and transportation for larceny and some other thing I cant read because ink has faded. I think it was his second offence. So did he get transported?
Did he return to UK? did he get reduced sentence? How do we follow him? Maybe he is our Benjamin.

It doesn't explain how James Porter b 1833 Shropshire could be his son but I'm wondering if James was cared for by his grandparents and that is why he named his first daughter Ellen. I am going to look at 1841 Census for Edward and Ellen next? long shot maybe.

Thank you all for your searches.
I am not to sure of how to get around Rootschat anymore, it has changed so much.
Wivenhoe. Yes I have that information. Elizabeth was on Electrol roll as PORTER as well as at her death and burial. Thanks  but still no marriage. William Henry, the youngest child died in France in WW1. Linda had a son Robert then later married Robert S Jones and moved to Sydney suburbs.
Son not on BDM Robert Porter b 1881 Wagga, died 8/12/1906 in hospital Wagga. Two days after his father James PORTER d. 6/12/1906 at home Docker St,Wagga. They were both buried in Ch of E Cometary Wagga. The Wagga Advertiser has burial  notices 10/12/1906. There are no birth registrations for Benjamin PORTER b 1863 but he did indeed exist. James PORTER listed himself as goldminer on Hellen's birth certificate 26/2/1862, so maybe the family was moving around before settling into Wagga and his brickmaking business down by the river. All of the rest of the children born Wagga Wagga.

majm..I think Ann may have died in childbirth 1875 daughter Mary Therese was born then and the last listed child of Ann and James. Then four years later Elizabeth gives birth to John b 1879 James PORTER father. Wagga. Followed by Robert in 1881 Wagga, then Eleanor Belmore in 1883 Wagga then Linda Lillian b 1889 Wagga and last William Henry in 1893 Wagga.
All 13 children from Hellen down to William Henry are named and ages at the time of the death certificate of James PORTER are listed correctly. The thing is the Place of marriage, age  and to whom column lists Albury,NSW age 28 yrs. Ann McCaffery. (different spelling) Not a mention of Elizabeth on the certificate at all.  Interesting thing William Henry Jones is listed as witness to burial. I'm wondering if he is Elizabeth's father or brother as he was listed in the newspaper as pall bearer. Her youngest son was named William Henry and on her death notice says her fathers name was William. The Electrol roll you found lists all the older children of James and Elizabeth, not the two youngest as not old enough.

Dundee.. Yes they all stayed with James until marriage or death. I wonder if Elizabeth came into their lives as a domestic, because Hellen would have been only 13 in 1875.

Thank you everyone for your efforts, I hope I have done this corerectly.

There are no detail on his marriage or death certificates, only age 28 in May 1861, and batchelor and England. His daughter filled out his death details, with father Benjamin and place of birth Shropshire. That is why this is so hard.
Thanks everyone for trying. He was in Australia for the 1861 Census.

Hi, yes I have his death certificate and all of his children are listed with their ages correctly. The only marriage mentioned is his one to Ann Caffrey 20th May 1861, in Albury, NSW. The details were given by his eldest daughter then aged 44 yrs. And she was close to her step mother.
