Angus (Forfarshire) / Re: McCarthy 1921 Census

Presume you have tried a christian name only search on the free index or using the wildcard search  m*ca* in case the name is mistranscribed?

Hi CaroleW

Thank you for your reply. I had a feeling when I was writing my post that I would end up looking a bit silly.

I tried various first name only searches (with a second person as otherwise there would be too many results), so things like Mary aged 7 or 8 with a Margaret or Margaret aged 17 or 18 with a Michael. I also tried wild cards with 'McCarthy' surname searches to no avail.

But your m*ca* suggestion has done it and I believe I have found them in Milton, Lanark.

McCarty seems like such an obvious alternative to McCarthy and I can't quite believe I didn't see it before. But I'm am very glad I asked here, thank you very much for your help.

Angus (Forfarshire) / McCarthy 1921 Census
« on: Monday 26 August 24 13:21 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I am struggling to find this family on the 1921 Census. Can anyone help please?

In 1911 they lived at 13 West Shore Street, Buckhaven, Fife:

Michael McCarthy (37)
Mary McCarthy (34)
Margaret A. McCarthy (7)
John McCarthy (6)
Michael McCarthy (2)
Andrew McCarthy (8 months)
Mary E Gonoud (15)

I know the family later moved to Dundee, but I am not sure if they would have been there in 1921 or still in Fife (or somewhere else).

I have both Michael and Mary's birth records and they would actually have been 41 and 39 respectively. Michael (senior) appears to have gone by a few names (Carty, then Carthy, then McCarthy, and finally McCartney) but the others always seem to go by McCarthy. I tried searching the various surnames anyway, with no luck.

Andrew McCarthy died in 1912 but all the others were alive in 1921. Also on the 1921 Census should be Mary (or May) Kate McCarthy, born in 1913 in Buckhaven, Fife.

Mary Ellen Gonoud was the niece of Mary McCarthy. She married Dominic McAlear in 1918 and is on the 1921 Census living at 16 Dempster St. Dundee. I know from later records that the McCarthys lived at 18 Dempster Street but they are not there in 1921 (the same page Mary Ellen and Dominic are on shows number 18, and a Peter Taylor and family lived there). The witnesses on the marriage record are not McCarthys, so no luck narrowing down an address that way.

The next record I have is from Mary Kate's marriage in 1933. She lived at 18 Dempster Street, Dundee. So there is nothing for any of the McCarthys between 1913 and 1933. Here is all the information I have on the family:

Michael McCarthy
Born Michael Carty, 31st August 1869, Cloonagh, County Longford, Ireland
Married Mary Gonoude (as Michael Carthy - 153 Overgate, Dundee), 14th April 1902, St. Andrews Cathedral, Dundee, Scotland
Died 4th August 1933, aged 63 (as Michael McCartney, 18 Dempster St. Dundee)

Mary McCarthy
Born Mary Gunood, 18th February 1872, Tullamore, Ireland
Married Michael Carthy (as Mary Gonoude - 136 Overgate, Dundee), 14th April 1902, St. Andrews Cathedral, Dundee, Scotland
Died 12th September 1938 aged 66 (18 Dempster St. Dundee)

Margaret Ann McCarthy
Born 19th August 1903, 2 Victoria Buildings, Methil, Fife
Married John Herd (34, divorced), 18th July 1942, Scoonie, Fife, aged 35 (she was actually 38)
Died 1986, Dundee, aged 83
No known children

John McCarthy
Born 1905, Buckhaven
Died 17th August 1955, aged 50. Lived at 75 Grassmarket Edinburgh.

Michael McCarthy
Born 1908, Buckhaven
Died 1988, Dundee

Andrew McCarthy
Born August 1910, Buckhaven, Fife
Died 13th December 1912, aged 2. Lived at 62 East High Street, Buckhaven.

Mary Ellen Gonoude
Born 14th May 1895, Tullamore, Ireland
Married Dominic McAlear (bachelor, 22) 16th December 1918, St Andrews Cathedral, Dundee (aged 23)
1921 lived at 16 Dempster Street, Dundee
Died 1983, Dundee

Mary Kate McCarthy
Born May Kate McCarthy, 16th September 1913, 62 East High Street Buckhaven
Married James Bowes 22nd July 1933, aged 19, St Joseph’s Church Dundee. Lived at 18 Dempster St. Dundee.
Died 1989, Dundee

I have tried searching for relatives I know to have been in Scotland at the time, in the hope the family may have been staying with relatives. Mary McCarthy had a few siblings

Andrew Gonoude (Mary Ellen's father) - married a few times but in 1921 he resided in Inverkeithing, Fife and had started to be known by his mother's maiden name, Ryan.
John Gonoude - married to Bridget Healy and in 1921 was living in Hawkhill, Dundee
Catherine Gonoude - Married John Kelly and in 1921 they lived at Overgate, Dundee
Dora Gonoude - Married Joseph Burry or Berry and in 1921 they lived at Overgate, Dundee

No sign of any of the McCarthys. Michael McCarthy had no known relatives in Scotland. I have looked through all McCarthys on Scotland's people and while there are many Marys and Michaels etc. none match when you look at the other names.

So I think the family are simply missing from the Census. If anyone is able to find something I have missed I would be very grateful.

Thanks in advance.

United States of America / What happened to William Baxter?
« on: Sunday 02 December 18 11:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

Yesterday I visited my great-aunt who told me her dad had a younger brother who 'went to America and no one knows what happened to him'. So I thought I would see if I can find something. Here's what I do know:

William Baxter was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1903 to David Baxter and Margaret McLeod (m.s. Thomson). He emigrated to New York in 1926, sailing from Glasgow on 6th November.

He married Mary Collins (m.s. Low, born 1905 in Dundee, Scotland) in 1928. Mary had a son, Douglas Archibald Collins b.1927 from her first marriage to Harry Collins. Mary arrived in New York in 1923, along with her mother, step-father and siblings.

On the 1930 Census, William, Mary and Douglas are living in Bloomfield, Essex, New Jersey. Next door were her mother, step-father and family.

On the 1940 Census, Mary is living with her mother and step-father, along with her son Douglas and daughter, Betty Baxter (aged 7). Her marital status is 'Divorced'.

She applied for naturalization in 1941. Her application states that her husband's name is William, he is not naturalized, and his residence is unknown. It also says she has another daughter, Wilma Baxter, born in 1933.

So William and Mary would have separated at some point between 1933 and 1940. I cannot find William on the 1940 Census and I cannot find a record of his death. I also cannot find any military records or outgoing passenger lists that might match William. He doesn't seem to have applied for naturalization.

So can anyone help me find out what happened to William? I would like to be able to tell my aunt who is the last surviving member of the family.

Thanks in advance.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Date of this Army photo? (Scotland)
« on: Monday 22 October 18 21:43 BST (UK)  »
Hello,

Can anyone estimate the date of this old army photo please? I think it is of either my great-grandfather (1897-1968) or his father (1871-1898) -bottom row, second from the left. They looked really alike so I cannot tell and a date would help a lot. I thought someone might be able to tell the date from the uniforms or the guns?

Thanks for looking!

Thanks both, it is good to know that it is her as I have wondered for a while if there were any photos of her.

I case anyone is interested, here is a picture of the boys of the family, the older brothers of the girls in the first picture. I think this was taken before the girls were born, probably about 1933. My Grandad (1929-2011) is on the left. Sadly his brother Ronnie died in Belgium in January 1945, aged 20.

This is one of only 3 photos I have of my Grandad as a child and as far as I know, there are no photos of all 4 siblings together.

Hello,

I am fairly sure this is a picture of my Great-Grandfather James Casey, but would be grateful if someone might be able to give an approximate date? James Casey was born in 1883 and died in 1938.

I know it is terrible quality, and I am not expecting much but would be grateful if someone could have a go at cleaning up the picture a bit.

Many thanks in advance.
