The Common Room / Re: Merchant Seaman lost at sea

What would be the meaning of the ticket being cancelled? I googled but didn’t get a clear answer; I must admit I don’t know much about merchant navy records at all.

Interesting that he might have been issued a new number, I’ll have a look at that later, thank you for the suggestion!

The navy record isn’t him, but thank you. His parents were William Cossey and Isabel nee Moore who lived in Ditchingham and Kirby Cane in Norfolk.

Some years ago I spent rather a long time at TNA researching my own merchant navy ancestor. I'm a bit rusty on it now but I know that he had several ticket numbers in the period of time I was researching. Not sure why that was, he did jump ship in Quebec so perhaps he didn't want to admit to being the same person. Apparently it was a common occurrence for seamen to be poached for another ship. To this day I haven't found out how he returned but I do have copies of his records after that with a different ticket number.

This might not be any help to you but don't discount the possibility of other records in addition to the one you have.

The record states that he was lost on H M Ship "Queen"

There's something before that? And below.
Is it possible it means his ticket was lost on HM Ship Queen?
And he was given a new one, number 303, 979, or whatever that other number is :-\
I don't have access at the moment to browse the images.

Probably me being silly!

I would agree that it probably means his ticket was lost as the word above the entry appears to be 'Cancelled'.

Are those in the North-east looking out to sea?

I wasn't feeling too good Mark so wasn't watching but I gather the cloud cover made it a bit disappointing. We were supposed to get a huge red moon too, not sure whether that was last night or the night before, but that was obscured by cloud. Disappointing when it's been lovely and clear for a lot of the day.

I can't say I remember anything in particular about 1976 apart from the fact that it was hot.

I'm not one to wish for rain but I am now hoping for something significant enough to dampen down the fire that's raging on the North Yorkshire moors. The moors have been on fire for weeks, this latest inferno is near to Whitby and Scarborough, it's been exacerbated by hidden WW2 bombs exploding. Some local residents have been evacuated and more are on standby. It's a dreadful situation and if the rain can help,  bring it on!

Many thanks  :)

Armed Forces / Finding details of Royal Navy vessel
« on: Monday 25 August 25 17:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to help with tracing details of Royal Navy vessels from the information given on a service record. The names of the vessels are provided and the List and Number. Would these be Lloyd's List numbers? I've had a scout through Lloyd's List but not really sure what I'm doing. The period of time is during WW1.

Can anyone please point me in the right direction? The vessel that the person I'm helping is looking for was a submarine, not sure if that makes any difference to the search. I'd appreciate any help or links that would help me.

Thanks  :)

Could he have been in the Armed forces? Although Florence is recorded as being married, that doesn't necessarily mean she was married to Thomas Nesbitt. There is a 25 year age gap between them, not impossible of course but less likely I would think.

This is all supposition but could Thomas be a family member and the children listed as Nesbitt were Thomas' children but not hers? Do you know Florence's maiden name? Or perhaps he was her employer and she was a live in carer for the children.

We had a few chilly days but it's 27° today with a pleasant breeze, lovely for sitting out in the garden. It's been busy around here, people always want to visit the coast at bank holiday weekends. It was lifeboat day on Saturday and there have been a number of other popular events.

My cousin and his wife were here the week before last, visiting from Australia. I hadn't seen him since I was in my late teens and had never met his wife so it was good to get together with them. They left for Oz last week,  returned with a stopover. While they were here my cousin told me that he'd been trying to find out some information about his maternal grandfather who was in the Royal Navy but he hadn't had much success. I decided to see what I could find, to cut a long story short I managed to find his service record on TNA  website and was able to download it and email it to him. They've just got back home to Oz, have heard from them and he's really excited about my find. I think I might be appearing on Rootschat to try and follow up on the information on it! I was so pleased when I found it and even more so having heard how pleased my cousin is.  :D

Technical Help / Re: Amazon Problem with Ratings and Reviews
« on: Sunday 24 August 25 17:16 BST (UK)  »
Sorry if I'm being thick here - are you saying you want to see how many people have left a star rating but not any comments? And if that's the case, have you scrolled down to the end of the comments in each star rating? I think that's where the ones without comments usually are.
