Somerset / Re: Mary PHILLIPS Nether Stowey Convict

Am also trying to find whether we have a connection with Mary Phillips of Nether Stowey transported to Australia in 1787-88. My direct ancestor (8 generations) Lewis/Louis Phillips b1690 Nether Stowey, m Sarah Parsons 29 Apr 1708 Monksilver, Somerset, d1747 Nether Stowey, had children including James who married Sarah Poole 9 July 1746 in Monksilver, Somerset.
Mary Phillips's gravestone gives her age, suggesting she was born in 1765 Nether Stowey.
However, Sarah Phillips née Poole b1726 died in 1762 and, in any case, would have been too old to bear Mary at age 46?

It seems that after the Rev Norman Trewby died in 1938 and his son John was killed in action in 1939, his wife Maria and daughter Diana moved to Southview, Framfield, Sussex. Maria died there in 1963. Diana was a teacher at Framfield Primary and at Waldron Primary. She died around 2000.
My father knew the Trewby family when he was growing up in Ripe in the 1920s and 1930s.

Sussex / Re: Skippers Hill Manor School in the 1950's

Hi Corinne,
Regrettably I don't have any photos. Just a few memories of six months' working at the school in 1969 as an assistant French teacher when I was 19 and waiting to go to uni. I also supervised 'prep time' and with sports. JR was a kindly soul with a good SOH. I found his wife Maureen rather difficult. I shared a house with two bachelor teachers (names forgotten) just off the A267. I remember 'Skip' Mander(s?) who was quite a character. His rooms in the loft could be accessed only by rope ladder.
Good luck with the research!

I am interested in your William Butler. What was his occupation, who did he marry and where did he bring up his children?
I have a Butler/Soal connection - spelling is different but may be a derivitive?
I am also looking for the antecedents of William Butler born c1811 in Hellingly, East Sussex. He is in my direct line. Died in 1878. Married Martha Stapley, baptised 18 May 1807 in Buxted (and died sometime between 1861 and 1871), daughter of John and Jane Stapley, on 04 January 1836 at Hellingly. William Butler farmed at Springham Farm, Grove Hill, Hellingly. In 1851: 146 acres, employing 8 men, 3 boys and 1 girl.
Children of William and Martha Butler in 1851 (ages may be up to 5 years out):
Frederick Butler, son, 14, farmer’s son, b Hellingly.
Jane A Butler, daughter, 13, b Hellingly.
Maria Butler, daughter, 11, scholar, b Hellingly.
Thomas Butler, son, 9, scholar, b Hellingly.
[Martha Butler, daughter, approx 7, b Hellingly, visitor to Charles Stapley head of family, Grove Bridge Farm, Grove Hill, Hellingly.]
Walter Butler, son, 5, scholar, b Hellingly.
Arthur J Butler, son, 3, scholar, b Hellingly.
Elizabeth S (or T) Butler, daughter, 2, b Hellingly.
Unnamed [later named as Emily] Butler, daughter, 1 mth, b Hellingly.
Eldest son Frederick may have taken over Springham Farm for a brief period before and/or after 1871, possibly on his marriage to Elizabeth Stapley at Hellingly in 1867.
