There is an Airman's service record for Alfred Frank HAWKER on FindMyPast he attested in 1918 and contains info about his wife and children which may help you to identify if its the right man.

Slap my wrists - I saw that in the listing but decided he was maybe too old for early recruitment.

Died 2 Dec 1886, Excelsior - cause Apoplexy.  Engineer. Scottish but abode Swansea.

He's listed in the UK 'Deaths at Sea' records - British Armed Forces And Overseas Deaths And Burials   - 2 records.

I found him in F M P but the record would be available on other sites.

There is a Sydney J, 1906 in Chard. If that's any good. 

Also in Chard,  an Alfred V , b. 1899.

It might be worth doing a variants  search
