Hi runicman,
a belated welcome to rootschat. :)
do you have your family in the censuses? I think it's them who are in Preston in 1851 and they have a child Patrick with them who was born in Chester. Is this your family? So they would have arrived in Southport via Preston and Chester.
This would tell you that they arrived sometime between Mary 1841/43 and Patrick 1847. I know it doesn't help with Mayo origins though.
best wishes
heywood

Long time no post. You were 'correct' as our family DID come from Preston. We got the 1851 census and it is them. I checked Cheshire BDMs and discovered that  Patrick was born in 1847. I also think he may have died in 1860.

Trouble is there are lots of churches in Mayo and I would have no idea where to start hunting. I just thought I would chuck in a wild card with the names in case someone had such inside info that had researched this root before

Needle in a haystack I think.

Cheers anyway.

I'm still seaching for the marriage of James Regan to Sarah (Sally) Kerrigan (or Karigan) from Mayo. Dunno the date though but they were in Preston with several kids in 1851.

We are very grateful for your help and the Preston link is most fascinating. you are right about the Mayo thing being hard to trace also as we have been at it for ages. I suppoose its all about knowing where to look AND WE ARE NOT EXPERT AT THIS STUFF. .

Wondeful date thank you so much - I will ask the family what they think.

We seem to have hit a brickwall with data from Mayo for James as apparently some fire destroyed a lot of Irish records.

This bit is very interesting

4 September 1851  Birth
Sarah Regan
Parents James Regan and Sarah Keregan

I have a feeling that this may be on the right track. We thought that Mark Regan was their only child though who later got wed in 1870 to Ellen Wilkinson at St Maries church
