I am desperately searching for a death record and/or any other information post 1920 for my great-grandmother, Evangeline Maud Roycroft (b. 1878, Dublin). She emigrated to the US in May 1913 following the illegitimate birth of my grandmother in November 1912.

(The original thread where some lovely rootschatters tracked her down for me is here topics merged

In the 1920 US Census she is single, known as 'Maud E Roycroft' and is living and working with the Hannah family in New Trier, Illinois but here the trail goes cold. She is also a little forgetful about her age, so I have had to be mindful about that.

Her sister Elsie Blanche Roycroft also emigrated to the US a year or two before, but I have found Elsie's obituary in 1965 and her only known relatives were said to be nephews back in Ireland, suggesting that Maud had either died before her sister or that they were no longer in contact.

I have found the Hannah family in the 1930 US Census and they have moved away and she is not listed with them.

Can anyone help me with this?

Sophie

Philip - Yes his father was also a David Evans, named as deceased at the time of the wedding, occupation a lifeboat man.

Yes I had seen this 1911 census entry and it seemed the most likely match. My only issue is with the Lowestoft birthplace, as I cannot match him to any birth reg in that area!

Keyboard - He died in Hull in 1945. Yes he married Rose Hilda Smith in 1912, whose mother was Georgina Smith. It seems that the whole family moved to Hull during WW2 from Ellesmere Port. Rose then remarried in Hull in 1959, I haven't confirmed her death yet but there is only one entry that fits her age and name and it is 1967 back in Wirral.

Hi all,

I am looking for any information regarding my great-grandfather David Lewis Evans whom I have found on the 1919 Absent Voters List in Great Stanney, Cheshire.

According to this list he was a Private in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, service no. 78001, however I cannot find any service information for him.

I know that he was born around 1891 according to his marriage cert. and age at death (1945) but I do not know where. He was married in 1912 in Chester, living on Westminster road and working at the leadworks.

If anyone could help me find any further information about his time in the army I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Many thanks Gadget and Carol - I thought it might be some army term but this is definitely some food for thought, especially since he died less than 12 months later.

Can anybody help me with the last two words of William Taylor's occupation?

It has been transcribed as army pensioner 'totally', but doesn't seem to make sense?

Thank you all for your ideas.

Treetotal - I didnt think about newspapers so thank you. I have had a brief look and there are a number of possibilities - I would never have thought babies for adoption would have been advertised as such!

jim1 - she was Protestant but thanks for comments.

jorose - Thankyou for this, I will have a closer look at her Uncle and see if I can link him further. The house seems to be a private house and no obvious links to any institutions but I will have another look.

Family History Beginners Board / Adoption in 1912

Hello, I was wondering if anyone had any information on the adoption process in 1912, more specifically who could have been involved and who would have arranged it?

This is in relation to my grandmother who was adopted at some point between 1912/3. She was born in Hull in November 1912 and baptised December 1912 at her local church. Her birth mother was unmarried and born in Dublin - she was still there at the 1911 Census. Although there was a link to Hull through her uncle, (who had been born there) there were no known close family connections and none known between her adoptive parents, who were from Barton upon Humber. The same address is given on my grandmother’s birth & baptism certificate so her birth mother obviously stayed around for a while- she later emigrated to America in May 1913.
