Falkyrn/Meliora
Thanks for those latest findings. That has certainly opened up a whole new area for us to explore, no wonder the refrigerator was invented!!! William Sturla was generally shown on census forms as an Engineer. His father (of the same name) was a Shipwright in Limehouse, Chatham (where he was born) and Plymouth. There appears to be no other evidence of service at sea for William the younger. After the death of his first wife he remarried the widow of a Lighterman within about a year. His second wife is on the Argnum with him.
Thanks again

Nanny Jan,
Yes as far as I can make out he was always listed as a shipwright. He also had a 14 year old son at one time as a shipwright too. His eldest son was an Engineer but finished up as a Shipkeeper. So it would seem that boats or ships are in their blood.

Nanny Jan,
What a simple solution to the Sturla Road question, thanks for that let us hope they had a reason!! Can any one help with the other bits?

Meliora,
Absolutely fascinating. Not as romantic as we first thought but then I guess someone had to do it. Any ideas where the ice would have come from or how long a 'barge' load would last before we were left with a hold full of water? What a damp cold existence for those on board.

Kent / William Sturla why Go To Devon?
« on: Monday 29 January 07 18:44 GMT (UK)  »
We have a William Sturla in our Family. He was born it appears, in Chatham about 1810. He worked it is thought in the Chatham maritime area. At some stage he goes down to Plymouth (shipyards again) here he meets a local girl Emela Brooking born about 1816. Brings her back to Chatham where they marry in 1838, William for the second time!! Why would they have come up to Chatham to wed? Was the Sturla Road in Chatham named after or connected with this William Sturla. By the 1871 Census it would appear that William and Emela have made their way to Limehouse and William is listed as a shipwright. Would this be a trade you could follow in Limehouse? Both end their days in Stepney which seems a long way from Chatham and Plymouth

At the time of the 1891 Census my wife's Grandmother is shown as a Shipkeepers Daughter living with her father William Sturla on the vessel Argnum. Does anyone know anything about this craft. He was with his second wife and her children too. Did Families live on board? or would it just be for census details. Is Shipkeepers Daughter an occupation?

Armed Forces / Robert Johnston at Burslem Staffordshire 1851
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 23:40 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
I  am looking for details of my G.G. Grandfather Robert Johnston  He was born in Manchester 1829 I feel I may have found reference to him at Burslem in Staffordshire in the 1851 Census report. I know he was in the army at some stage I remember years and years ago seeing an old sepia print of two soldiers and being told it was my fathers grandfather!! He would have been out by 1861 as he married in London. What was at Burslem? Where might I find more details of servicemen of this period? Would he have been involved in a campaign at that time?

Cambridgeshire Completed Lookups / Re: Robert Johnston and now Anna Minett
« on: Sunday 28 January 07 23:24 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,
About 11 months ago I started looking for details of my family in the Fordham area I had heaps of help and closed the search when I thought it exhausted however, and there is always a however in Family History searching it seems. I have since found I had wrong female names!!! Robert Johnston b. Manchester b1829 was correct, but he met and married Anna Minett born Fordham 1834. Her Parents were Chas. F. W. Minett b1800 and Sarah Curtin (I think) b 1800. The Minetts had moved to London at some time. Robert and Anna married in 1861 at St. Mathias in Bethnal Green. This would put the move between 1834 and 1861. I have visited Fordham and viewed Graves for Minett family dated around 1840's. Would anyone have knowledge of links between my Minetts who moved, those who stayed and possible family with surname of Curtin who may have married Chas. Minett. I would welcome any information.

Thanks for the interest Suzard, Iria and Tony. Iria yes that is my family! I will have to look in BMD I guess. My Grandparents were married in 1900! with the Census in 1901! I am not going to get much more from there but thanks for that information. There are bit there I can use. I can remember my father saying about his sisters but in those  days I/we never paid much attention to what parents said, did we!
Suzard my father was born in Wyke Old Ford. I was born in Usher Road Old Ford 28 years later so no! there was not a lot of moving around until after the war.
Thanks for the tips. I will keep you posted!!
