My great granddad and his 3 brothers were all registered as Morgan - their mum’s husband’s name - even though their dad was called Hunt. My great granddad’s sister (also to Hunt) was registered as Fletcher - their mum’s maiden name - even though she was born in between the boys births. The husbands (along with the daughter from the marriage) lived a few streets away for 30 years and my grandma remembers there seemed to have been no shame in any of this. Although this was a bit later and in the 1910s.

2 out of my 3 children have ancestral surnames as their middle name. One is now a given Christian name and the other amuses my 3 year old as it is what a lot of England is getting.

I have a relative who put his mum's name on the marriage certificate. I can't find anything that happened to her.

I have another that put who I assume is her real dad on it. Hannah Parkinson put her dad as William Whitehead. No idea when he came from.

The best I've seen is an ancestor's husband putting 'can't remember' as father's name.

I only know of one marriage record being made unavailable by GRO, and that relates to a same sex marriage from the 1960s ( I have a copy though).

I'd be really interested in this incident and the backstory of it. Was it two males and did one pretend to be female or the other way around?

At the opposite end of this, all 8 of my great grandparents were born in the 1900s, 5 of them in the 1910s and 2 in the 1929s. My daughter was born 92 years after my great grandma was born. So 5 generations were born in under 100 years. That's not a long time I don't think.
