Hi everyone,

I'm struggling to find birth records for someone in my family tree, and I'm hoping someone might be able to help. Below is the only information I have:

Edward Dickinson (or Dickenson)

• Born: 1766 (location unknown)

• Died: 1837 in Hints

• Married to: Ann (possibly Critchley or Crutchley)

• Children:
     • Edward Dickenson (b. 1801, d. 1883)
     • Elizabeth Dickenson (b. 1798)
     • Mary Dickenson (b. 1796)
     • Thomas Dickenson (b. 1793)
     • Sarah Dickenson (d. 1808)

I've found a good amount of information about his son, Edward (b. 1801), who later moved to Birmingham. However, I’m really struggling to find anything on Edward (b. 1766) or his wife Ann/Anne — particularly where Edward might have been born.

I've checked for birth or baptism records in Hints, but haven’t had any luck. If anyone has suggestions or resources that could help, I’d be incredibly grateful.

Thank you!

The Common Room / Seeking Help: Connection Between Two Downs/Downes Families?
« on: Tuesday 17 September 24 17:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I’m researching two Downes families and trying to find out if they are connected. I’m hoping someone might have additional information or advice that could help me link them together.

Here’s what I know so far:

One family is connected to Ann Downes, born in 1867 in Stourbridge, to Edward Downes (1836-1894) and Jane Palmer (b.1835). Edward’s father was Thomas Downes (b.1796) and his mother Hannah (1796-1861). Thomas’s parents were Benjamin Downs and Mary (dates unknown), and the family seems to have been from Herefordshire, although some records indicate Edward might have been born in Kidderminster.

The other family is my own, connected to my great-grandmother, Annie Louisa Downs (1892-1973), born in Birmingham. Her parents were William Downs (1858-1930), born in Wannerton, Kidderminster, and Louisa Middleton (b.1863) in Birmingham. William’s parents were William Downes (1831-1904), born in Bransard, Worcestershire, and Hannah Bolton (b.1824) in Wolverhampton. William’s father was Thomas Downes (1811-1840) from Worcestershire, and his mother was Charlotte Kings (b.1806). I’ve traced back to Thomas’s parents, James Downes and Elizabeth (but I can’t find Elizabeth’s maiden name or either of their birth dates or locations).

I’m wondering if anyone here has come across either of these families in their own research or has any additional information that could help me link them together. Any leads or advice on records to check would be really appreciated!

Thank you for your time and help!

Family History Beginners Board / O'Connors in Dublin

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to find my Irish relatives from Dublin and am having trouble doing so. My great grandfather, Gerard Joseph Molloy, (b1912) had a sister called Jane Molloy, who married a man named Leo O'Connor. They married in 1931 and had two children together - Paddy/Paddy O'Connor (b1934) and Maura O'Connor (b1935). Does anyone know about either the Molloy's or the O'Connors? :)

Hi again, his parents are Henry Alfred Hardy occ Inn Keeper who married Emma Hall June qtr 1887 Derby 7b 830
At New Market Inn, East Street, Derby in 1891 census RG12/2727/9/12
So far if of course this is him, no sign of Gypsy heritage?

It probably is him, but I've found so many George Hardy's so I don't even know anymore. My grandad just told me that he thinks he was born in 1882, and the only one I've found from 1882 is one from Nottinghamshire.

Hi again, if you are certain his middle name was Alfred, then using what I believe to be his correct birth year we have:-

George Alfred Hardy Dec qtr 1887 Derby 7b 497 Mothers maiden name Hall

Okay thank you, he must've moved then as he died in Birmingham.

Travelling People / Surnames Hardy & Lee // Birmingham and Warwickshire
« on: Saturday 02 December 17 21:39 GMT (UK)  »
Hi, I have a great great grandfather who told my grandad that he lived on the Black Patch in Smethwick. His name was George Hardy, and I have heard that this was a common gypsy name. His wife had a mother called Eliza Lee, which I thought may also have some gypsy lineage as I also know that Lee is a common gypsy surname. Can anyone help me to find out if it is possible that any of my ancestors have gypsy heritage?

I've tried tracking them in censuses but I've hardly gone back. Yes, Alice's parents were Eliza Lee and Alfred James, but I've found him in some censuses under the name of William so I'm not too sure?
