Hi 'JustStarting'

I am William and Martha great grandchild, descended from their son Arthur George, AND their daughters Bessie and Ada (it's a very long story!).

I have had a connection with another of Walter John's descendants in the past and wondered which of his children you are linked to?

I would be very keen to know if you have a photograph of William at all as I believe there is one floating around somewhere in a box in Trowbridge.

I have been working on the Stone Family History for about 10 years and have many times been at the point of publishing when along comes some more information that I have to check out.  Walter's is one photograph I do not have included and I wonder if there is any possibility you would send one to  me via email - if you have one of course.

Regards,
Jan.

1861 Census details RG 9/1687/28

The following information is an exact transcription of the information.  The 'word' Do actually means the same as the symbol for ditto ".

William Stone, Head, Mar, 57, Dyer, Shepton Mallet, Somerset.
Elizabeth Stone, Wife, Do, 65, -, Bath, Walcot.
William Stone, Son, Do, 24, French Polisher, Bath, Widcombe.
William Stone, G Do, Unm, 5, Scholar, Do Do.

Hope this helps.

Have you found any factual evidence yet that your George was actually called William Stone before he changed his surname to Eyles?

Hi tawyn,

Don't go as I see you are online at the moment.  I will get the 1861 details and reply in a few minutes.

Hi all,

In 1861 William (5 yrs) is recorded as William STONE.

Yes, Florence married Jim Nairn and Alice married Percy Connor and I have a sneaking suspicion that somewhere in my notes it mentions that they or a daughter came to Australia and lived in Sydney.    I seem to recall an uncle saying he had visited one of his Dad's relatives in Sydney who was called Alice.

Thanks 'tawyn' for finding the death of a Lydia Stone.  I hadn't checked FREEBMD for a while so might consider buying the cert. to see if it is her.

Hello Muffin,

.......... the 1861 Census records William as 'M' (married) not 'W' (widower)

My apologies.  The Census doesn't actually use the letter 'M' to indicate William's marital status, it uses the "Do" symbol.  However, the meaning is the same - William was apparently married at the time of the Census.

Hello Muffin,

(In the meantime I have found out that her surname was CHAPMAN) I hope that I am correct there. ???

I think you'll find that her surname was BROWN but I hope you have better luck than me in finding a marriage for her and William.  I've been looking for ten years and I actually think William and Lydia EYLES  must have never divorced - unless she died before William met Martha, but I have not found a death for Lydia either prior to William and Martha's first child being born, and the 1861 Census records William as 'M' (married) not 'W' (widower).  That could have either been a mistake, or Lydia was still alive somewhere.

I have only entered Alice STONE in my family tree because she married Charles Edwin POW 1902 in Melksham. He was related to my family, also very confusing........... ::)

So I take it you are not a descendant of the STONE family?

My mother (now deceased) remembered "Charlie" and Alice Pow when she visited Trowbridge as a child.

Hello Muffin41,

William and Martha were my great grandparents.

I am descended from their son Arthur George, AND their daughters Bessie and Ada Mary .... don't ask, it's complicated!  So you will realise that I have quite a few STONE genes running through my veins.

How are you connected to the family?

Jan.
