Armed Forces / Re: 1901 army service record question
« on: Friday 03 October 25 22:28 BST (UK)  »
Thanks Ray and Shaun.

I hadn't realised the militia was part time. Do you know if there's likely to be another record of his service in the KOSB anywhere? I read that a lot of army records were destroyed during WW2, were they from the 1900-1914 period?

Armed Forces / 1901 army service record question
« on: Tuesday 30 September 25 13:19 BST (UK)  »
Hello, I'm looking for some help with a service record please.

James Anderson, No. 8848, joined the 3rd batt. Royal Scots on 11 July 1901. His address was 1 Wymess Terrace, Edinburgh. His age has 17 years, 11 months crossed out and 18 written above. Next of kin is Father William, 5 Union Pl. The record says that James moved to the Kings own Scottish Borderers on 2 Sept 1901. There's no info on his service after that.

My ancestor's brother James Anderson was living with his brother's family at 1 Wymess Terrace on the 1901 census. His father was William. The main discrepancy is the age. My James was born 23 May 1885 which would make him only 16 in July 1901. His age on the 1901 census was correctly given as 15. I have no confirmed information about James after the 1901 census.

I'm wondering whether there is another service record anywhere for the James Anderson in the Kings Own Scottish Borderers which might help confirm whether or not the army recruit is my ancestor's brother? And what were the rules around minimum age for recruits at that time?
Thanks very much.

Scotland / Switch off of Canmore, Scran and Scotland's Places
« on: Sunday 18 May 25 19:26 BST (UK)  »
Announcement from Historic Environment Scotland that Canmore, Scran and Scotland's Places will be switched off on the 24th June 2025. https://www.historicenvironment.scot/about-us/news/retiral-of-hes-web-services/

(I couldn't see an existing Rootschat topic on this but sorry if this is duplicate post.)

I've seen a few threads on social media saying that the replacement site trove.scot is not fit for purpose and turning off the existing sites is premature. Eg this one which I think you can read without having a bluesky account: https://bsky.app/profile/tagishsimon.bsky.social/post/3lpg2xtyo4c24

I've only used the three sites occasionally so I'm not familiar enough with them to know if the new site is a step backwards or not. Interested to know what Rootschatters who use the sites a lot think of the new one.

Armed Forces / Uniform identification and date?
« on: Saturday 31 August 24 11:55 BST (UK)  »
Hi, these photos were found in a couple of albums that probably belonged to my great grandmother. There are no names or dates written on any of the photos but the albums seem to be from 1900-1920ish. Can anyone identify the uniforms and/or be more specific about the dates?

I know my great grandmother had a brother in the Navy so maybe he is in the white uniform. Do you think the man sitting on the wall is the same person as the man in the white uniform?
Any ideas of the regiment of the army uniform? Or if it's pre WW1 or from WW1?
Thanks!

I also have questions about CR1 and CR2 records and thought I'd post here instead of starting a new thread.
The service record I'm looking at has a CR2 dated 11 March 1924, ship 143058, Port Nicholson.
On the back is a list of ship numbers and one date. Is this likely to be the date of joining the ship or date of discharge? The first ship on the list is also 143058, date 1 Aug 1925.

The CR1 is stamped 8 Sept 1924. Does this mean that he joined the ship in March 1924, left in Sept 1924 and then rejoined 11 months later in Aug 1925? Or did men sign up for a set period, like one year?

From newspaper reports, the Port Nicholson made a trip to Australia between March and Aug 1924 so he would have been back in the UK to be discharged in September. The ship then left for Australia again in October but hit a rock off Gran Canaria and passengers and crew had to be rescued, the cargo (including dynamite) transferred to another ship and the ship repaired. I'm trying to work out whether or not my grandfather was on this second voyage.
Thank you!
