Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup request Patrick Carrick marriage in 1852

Thank you to all who responded.

I had been looking throught the SA passenger lists for a Henry Carrick, and only recently realised it may also have been the Irish Carrigg.  Will follow this up.

Great idea about following up on Mary Cave on the Australian board.
Yes, there is information about Henry's death (coronial inquiry) and his funeral notice, plus a story in the Ballarat Star in Oct 1865 (18 months after Henry's death) requesting approval for her 3 older children to be taken to the Industrial School, aka, an institution for orphaned and/ or destitute children.  I have records of the Carrick children as Wards of the State (Victoria).

Again, to all who have responded a very big thank you. I am learning a lot!

Add to this list Charles born 1878
And
Alfred born 1889

Births
LOWREY Annie
Father John  Mother Eliza CARRIGG
At Streatham   1870 Reg#5566

I should have added that I have accessed BDM (multiple states where available) and retreived as much information as I can without downloading every certificate. I do where I can but the cost ultimately would be prohibitive for me to do this widely. Similarly, most of time is spent after hours, so I do rely on online information more than physically going to the geneology sections of libraries.

I do take your point about the need to revise some of my information. Many dates are abt so opens up +/- a year or two.  Still, all your points are valid, and as a relative novice, I am extremely grateful for your assistance.

The first child born in 1870 by a mother who was 10 years old ???
It would seem that birth certificates have not been viewed. Victorian certificates contain a wealth of information.
I would agree, you need to revisit your research.

Thank you so much Cando

I do have some of this, but not all. This gives me leads to follow up and verify at my end.  :)
Interesting that Eliza is listed as Carrigg (the Irish spelling) not Carrick as my documentation lists for Annie.

With much gratitude

I believe the name to be Scottish in origin.
There are numerous variations of the spelling - Lawrie, Lowrie, Lawry, Laurie, Lorrie, Laury, Lowery, Lawry.

There is no such thing as a "correct" spelling. Standardised spelling is a modern notion.

Thank you for responding. Yes, I was aware of some of the different spelling, which makes verifying information that much more difficult.  I agree that standardisation has come about with a general increase in overall literacy.

I do appreciate your guidance that the name is  most likely of Scottish origin.

Australia / Laurie / Lourie/Lowrie Family- Victoria

Hello fellow Family Researchers

My maternal G G Grandparents were Jonathan Laurie and Eliza Carrick (1860-1919). They had at least one child, my GG Mother, Annie (1872- 1923), born in Streatham, Victoria. The documents I have been able to research have the family name listed variously as Laurie, Lowrie and Lourie. I suspect the origin may be Irish, but eqully could be Scottish. Sometimes the written transcripts are hard to distinguish the actual letters, and I suspect the spelling was due to the actual government official taking the notation, no doubt a familiar story!  I do remember my late mother referring to her Grandmother as "Annie Laurie just like the song", so have always stuck (rightly or not) with that spelling.

Can anyone assist with: The origin of the name and therefore the "correct" spelling and any information about Jonathan and his origins.  I have a separate thread request for info about Eliza Carrick and her family, but all help, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated.

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Re: Lookup request Patrick Carrick marriage in 1852

Hello!

I am a novice on this site, but have dipped in and read some interesting posts that relate to my own family research; in particular Henry Carrick (1830 -1864). Henry's parents were Anthony Carrick and Lucinda Lawless. Henry migrated to Australia, marrying a Mary Cave in March 1854 at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Adelaide, which at the time was a fledgling colony proud to be established with free settlers instead of convicts. They moved to Ballarat in Victoria, quite likely following the gold rush. Henry died in his early 30s, leaving a wife and a young family, and while he must have been respectable, he left his family destitute. Mary applied to have her eldest children made Wards of the State, with no further information about her available after this time.
I would really like some information on Henry's Irish family. Clearly they were of some standing, with evidence of ownership of property in Killaloe. When did Henry leave Ireland and if possible, why?  Why was his Australian family left destitute upon his death?   Further information about Mary Carrick nee Cave is also sought.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have looked at the article you spotted Heywood - that particular Anthony Carrig was 83 years old when he died.

'He was of Killaloe, the possessor of some property in the town, and the best fishing rod maker in Europe. He was an intelligent and well informed man, and in early life served a portion of his time to Mr Barry, a bookseller and stationer, formerly in Limerick.'

As Heywood said - the newspaper was Limerick Reporter 3 Sept 1867 - and the report simply says 'A few days ago' - regarding the date of death.
If this Patrick was the right Patrick then yes he had a father Anthony and mother Lucinda who had a child Anthony Lawless Carrick. My cousin who is a descendant of Mary Ann Carrick is a sister to Patrick and Anthony Lawless Carrick along with Henry and Robert and possibly a Lucinda Carrick. My cousin had 8 DNA matches to Anthony Lawless Carricks descendants.

Henry Carrick and Mary Ann Carrick moved to Australia.

Headstone inscription: Erected by Robert Carrick to the memory of his mother Lucy Carrick, who died January 20th 1840 aged 44 years. And his father Anthony Carrick, who died August 26th 1867 aged 88 years.

Also for Patricks family there are no children named Anthony or Lucy. re Irish naming tradition

Anthony's death registration has been transcribed on Irish Genealogy as Carrigg.

Thanks Judith

The registration in NSW BDM certainly applies to Catherine Sinclair (nee Briggs). The John is of course her father, John Briggs who died in Mintaro, SA.

i have a Henry John Sinclair in my family tree (Ancestry) who was born around 1845 /45 in Oundle, near Winwick in Northampton, UK.  The listing is for a Henry Ruddifer Briggs, with Catherine as the mother, no father listed.  Informant was John Briggs, Grandfather (of Henry).

I cannot find any further record of Henry, other than to assume that he became Henry John Sinclair.  The death certificate for same lists mother as Catherine Briggs and William Sinclair as the father, yet Henry was born prior to both William and Catherine meeting (one assumes since William hailed from Larkshire, Scotland).  Do you have any information on this Henry to confirm that he is one and the same?  I think in 1848 after William and Catherine were married but before their son William John was born, that Henry simply became known as Henry Sinclair.  Don't think colonial records were that specific.

Can I ask if you are related through Catherine?  If so, we are distant relatives!
