No Samuel Martin and Margaret Neilson marriage certificate only the fathers are listed. I have since found a funeral listing for Catherine in October 1854 who died of a stroke the internment details include a reference to her maiden name as well. Considering the children went to the boarding school in Ayr at a very early age it sounds a possibility. The lair is in Gorbals, it may be what is now called the Rose Garden as was John  but I haven't confirmed that

I don't suppose anyone has an image of John Neilson?

Hi, yes a visited the plaque when I was last in Glasgow (2017) its in what is known as the rose garden in Govan. Just behind the Police station. It looks like the graves were transferred and the headstones placed around the garden wall. It's in a bit of a sorry state, the garden that is, in fact, most cemeteries are. I found used syringe needles and beer cans in the bushes. Glasgow is somewhat poor since the ship and steel making is gone. I think the population has declined from 1.2M to about 600k now.

I also do not understand why John Neilson would have left money to Catherine in his will if she was dead before him.

Do you know whereabouts she died as I haven't managed to find a death certificate listed? The Catherine Neilson I found in 1881 census was living in South Row at Summerlee she was 60/61 at the time which makes the age correct and the row was owned by Walter Neilson.

I think that Catherine Neilson the second wife of John may have been living at the Summerlee iron foundry in 1881. There is a woman of that name and the correct age listed as a widow sharing a home with three other workers. As John and his son Walter were original co-founders of Summerlee and Walter an executor of John's estate and Catherine was left a small stipend of £25 pa in John's will it's possible she is his widow.

yes momento chaps have been very helpful but not on this occasion. It seems to me that as he died in his house at Oakbank and at the time the nearest church was St Georges in the Field it may have been that. He isnt listed on the other Necropolises. My thinking is this that plaque in the rose garden which was an old burial ground seems more like a stake of ownership. When James became wealthy he created a mausoleum Tongland Abbey and John wasn't buried there. This seems like something they did together when they were young. And that would have predated the creation of the necropolises. I sort of wonder if they did that because space was running out and Glasgow population was growing geometrically. John was born in Gorbals and of course his dad Walter worked there in colliery so it may have a sentimental meaning.

I am not convinced he is actually buried in Govan even though it was a burial ground as the Oakbank foundry and his house where he died was in Barony. I visited it last week.
